I'd really like to get a comprehensive survey of pre CBS strat weights - just for my own research and database.

Would LOVE it if you fellow owners could chime in with the date (neck will do) and weight of your pre CBS strats.

Mine has a NOV 63 date and weighs exactly 7 and a half pounds.

    Let me clarify - that's 7 pounds, 8 ounces. Or 7.5 pounds :) :)

My experience is that there's a lot of mixing metric and imperial measurements, so please be specific when you list the weight - 8.2 pounds does not mean 8 pounds and 2 ounces!

If in doubt use grams, and I'll do the conversion.

If you don't know how to weigh your strat, here's how. Place a container on the scale, something to place the strat on but still be able to read the display. Put the container on, zero the scales, then lay the strat on like this:

    Thanks!

Oh, doesn't have to be just your strat. If you know of others online where the weight is listed, put them down here too.

If I remember right 7#'s 12oz... it's not a super light weight instrument, but not crazy heavy either.

Luggage scales, with a hook or strap, also work nicely. You can pick one up at Walmart for a few bucks and they are handy to have around.

All my data are for the guitars without trem arm and without ashtray (yes, some still had them on)

    .

OP: If you can work out summaries of a bar chart frequency distribution and a X-Y chart of guitar age vs weight when you're done that would be great to see in the thread.

That stands to reason. My all original '55 with whammy and bar attached is 6.75 lbs (3.06 kg) as measured on on the postal scale. The dates for pots, body and neck are July, Aug, Sept. The '55's are known for their light weight according to the collector at this site.

Or get one of these Oxo scales with a pull out display so you can read it with the guitar on it. Mine will weigh up to 11 pounds.

Wow, that is light. I have '59 tribute swamp ash hardtail that weighs in at 6.8 lbs (a full 1.1 lbs lighter than my AVRI, but close to a lb heavier than your '55).
And, just reading 1955 hardtail has me drooling :)

My lightest guitar is the 2008 NOS Nocaster I got last week. 6.43lb. It's a cool thing to have a light guitar in your stable, tonal virtues (or lack of) aside -it's just damn comfortable!
