O.K. I ventured out today to the local guitar store, and ran into an acquaintance I haven't seen in quite a while.

We just smiled and waved, and then he sauntered on over. I knew that he had, within the last year or so, bought a new Strat online, and I asked him how he was liking it. I thought he was going to come completely unhinged.

He told me something about a dog knocking over a coffee cup, and when he sat on the couch to play a little, the edge hit the coffee cup and put a little ding on it. I said "it happens, sooner or later."

His response....drum roll please. "I want to turn pro someday, and people won't take you seriously if you have a guitar full of dings."

I said "Did you ever see that piece of crap, that probably wouldn't have sold on Ebay for over 50 bucks, if it didn't have EVH as the owner? He took that P.O.S and made music history, and a legend of himself with it. SRV's no. 1 wasn't too sweet looking either."

The hope to never see acquaintance just sighed, like he was in disappointed with my answer, mumbled something, and sauntered off.

Point being? Some peoples fathers really should have used a condom.

send him a photo of this... it's been played by pro's who have made considerable contributions playing it in recor*ding studios and concert venues all over the planet.

it will likely fetch something in low 5 figures when it sells.

    *ETA spelling correction.

    Very cringe

I don't even buy guitars that are brand new anymore :whistling:

But your friend is funny. Tell him next time that the pros are actually paying other people to ding their guitars, stain the fretboard, and strip the finish in advance for them, might just blow his mind.

You know what's interesting? When I was a kid, that logic held true. Since we were KIDS there was no guarantee that someone actually could play just because they said they could play. Showing up with nice gear was actually important at times to be assumed to be a musician.

All that went away pretty quickly though. When I was 17 working in a music store I was putting a set of strings on a black Les Paul owned by one of the other sales guys. He was a buddy and about 10 years older. Looking at his black LP was like staring at a black hole. No light escaped. It was so dirty and beaten up and cloudy that it did not reflect light at all. "Gary, want me to shine...." "NOOOO!!!" "umm, ok."

Well, I take good care of my guitars, but I'm never "going pro". Circumstances where you want a spotless guitar if you're going pro? Auditioning for an R&B singer, or something like the modern day equivalent of Madonna, where the guitars are simply eye-candy and exist to fill out the music and cover mostly rhythm. Maybe.

If your acquaintance hopes to join a boy band or a reboot of the Lawrence Welk band...something where a clean cut image might have some weight, he might be on to something. Otherwise, you might be better off for not having seen him in a long while.
