Reasonably price 12" for higher gain stuff.

Getting a Micro Dark Terror from one of our esteemed members and thinking about building a little cab. I am assuming that there is not a magic speaker out there that can do anything well so I guess the question will be: "Which of the reasonably prices 12" speakers should I use for higher gain stuff with the little Orange?"

    Thanks,

Vintage 30 is a good one, and Warehouse Reaper is good and inexpensive

Thanks. I see the Reaper recommended a lot.

Eminence Legend GB128. High gain is all amp, so the speaker shouldn't really break up. 64 bucks. :D

Maybe a Mesa black shadow - they come up for sale used fairly regularly as people go off chasing more booteek improvements but they are really good...

Yummy. I shall build a lovely cabinet out of the best crappy lumber I can find!!

Thanks, fezz, I think that will work fine.

Been looking at speakers myself. Those Eminence GB 128 sound great in demos. I'm tempted to get one because I generally play at low volumes but may need to pass.
I need something for my Music Man RD 112 One Hundred and the GB is 50 watts, I think.

I liked the Swamp Thang sound but was bummed that I couldn't find a good demo with the V128. Definitely like saving $35 on it but I've yet to pull the trigger.
A neo mag would be great from a weight standpoint. The MM is real heavy.
Since I'm cheap the V128 legend may be in my destiny. You've used them?

I am not a fan of closed back cabs so I think this will be a semi open back with maybe a third of the rear area exposed. This will be an "everything" cab so between Boyo and I it could be anything from Hendrix to Pantera. I personally prefer a looser sound, even at higher gain, more grunge and garage than hair metal. Thin floating baffle?

Eminence Governor is a good and cost effective V30 clone!

OK, tiny amp on the way, speaker on the way. Better build a cab.

I have been looking at their page for a long time but just ordered the Eminence that fezz suggested. I wish I had means and time to try all of them. :D

    Thanks for the comment, Percy.

Mesa Black Shadow were of varied makes. Some were based on the Celestion G12-80 :thumb:
There were also Black Shadows made by EV, based on the EVM 12L, and I am sure there were others.
Mesa never made them, just as they never made their own tubes. They use rebranded high quality parts from other manufacturers.

@Dadocaster - My vote is for the Celestion V30. get a UK made if you can, they are far better than the Chinese made imprts that are now being sold.

You'll dig that speaker. I like all Emi speakers. Even the OEM offerings for Fender, Mesa, Peavey etc..

3/8" Baltic birch plywood. The baffle is like the sounding board on a piano.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what I was thinking. I have done a bit of this kind of stuff before, not a woodworker but I think I can make something that will work and look nice too.

    Thanks, fezz parka
