I listen to a lot of music spanning more than 7 decades and, while forms are timeless, often the subjects are just quaint or dated. No one's really stealin' daddy's T-bird to go surfin' anymore... But some stuff holds up and manages to retain relevance and really hold up over time. What's yours? This is mine.
Relevance is the last thing I want in my music. I have a hundred different sources of "relevant" hitting me in the face with "relevant" all day everyday. While it may pre-date my generations, I would rather hear about the stolen T Bird than some snot nose kid ruminating on things they have no actual knowledge of
Thanks for posting that track from 'Freak Out'. I bought that double LP in 1968, but sold all my vinyl in the 70's, and haven't heard that track for over 50 years. I remember the liner notes: "Sometimes he talks to the audience. Sometimes there is trouble."
Wow, tough question. So many come to mind I have to pass. I'd be here until a week from now still trying to pick one out of hundreds and hundreds. Some that come to mind are, in no particular order are: Led Zepplin Mike Oldfield Pink Floyd Kraftwerk Jimi Hendrix Janis Joplin... I could go on all day.
You're welcome. Actually posting that caused me to do something I'd been putting off...going through my boxed up Zappa vinyl and starting the bittersweet process of cataloging and valuing the stuff for eventual sale. I found a lot of stuff I'd forgotten about including a 10 disk box set of live performances from the early 70's, a 1980 fall tour catalogue, singles of I don't wanna get drafted and Dweezil's debut 45..even at least one, maybe 2 copies each of Freak Out, Absolutely Free and We're Only In It For the Money...my favorite album cover of the bunch.... Lotta memories in that container...
