Steely Dan meets the immortal Oklahoman, James Garner.

Nice versions. Larry's got a great melodic voice. His work on The Royal Scam still resonates with me; Kid Charlemagne and Don't Take Me Alive are two of my favorites. Nice to hear him quote bits of them.

    Thanks for posting those.

Gotta say I miss the cheesy ARP Odyssey synth tone from the original Rockford TV theme though.

That section sounds like something off an early Styx album....

Yeah, the original synth had a great portamento, with a sort of nonchalant whistling quality to it.

Fezz, you mean it wasn’t Keith Partridge and his Ovation rocking those tunes? My childhood is now meaningless. Next you’ll tell me that Mike “Wool Hat” Nesmith didn’t play lead on “Valerie.”

I grew up watching Rockford kick ass every afternoon at 5pm. Sometimes the theme song goes on auto play in my head. Some really good music from that era. Larry Carlton... What can you say. He’s definitely left a sonic mark on my generation. People may not know his name but they know his work. I used to buy Guitar Player magazine almost exclusively to read his column and Craig Anderton’s and Steve Morse’s.

Don't Take Me Alive has one of the best guitar intros ever! Anybody willing to show how you play that first chord?? I'm still mystified.

This is so cool. I’m in a bit of a Steeley Dan phase right now. I just finished watching The Making of Aja (again) and I’ve got all those great melodies and beats going through my head. This was the icing on the cake. What a blast!
