Growing up in the US none of my friends or I ever heard of Rory Gallagher. I'm amazed I had never heard him until three or four years ago. My friends outside the US all seem to know and love him. Guess they were trying to keep him from us crass Americans ;).

Now I make sure to turn my friends in the US onto him, always the same reaction - How did we miss this.

I dunno...my buds and I saw him several times beginning around 1978.
The A-list is criminally short and the B-list is so long, it's easy for folks to get lost in it.

I completely agree here. I'm in my mid 30s and never heard of Rory Gallagher until I got really in to the electric guitar a couple years ago. Makes me wonder what else we are missing out on...

    I had the same experience.

I had never heard of him. About five years ago, a good friend of mine--the best bass player I ever knew--said, "You don't have 'Irish Tour 74'??? DUUUUDE! You gotta have that!" and he burned me a copy.

He was right. I had to have that. Then I bought everything else I could get my hands on.

    Rory was astounding.

Rory was an amazing guitarist and songwriter. He was also a very decent humble chap, always had time to meet his fans and sign autographs.
I was fortunate enough to see him play on five or six occasions.
One time, in Birmingham, I stood outside the loading area of the Odeon with a group of fans, hoping to catch site of Rory. He came out and chatted with us and signed autographs, and seemed to really appreciate that we'd come to see him play.
Thouroughly decent, bloke. No ego, just loads of talent.
Sadly, health issues took him from us too soon. Sadly missed.

I'm thinking it must be a function of age. I remember first discovering Rory in the mid-70's.

    Age hath it's privileges....

I turned my SRV-loving dad on to him a couple of years ago. It was my sad duty to break the news to him that Rory had been dead for a quarter-century when he inquired about seeing him play live.

Hmm...you must have just been otherwise occupied. I have, sitting on my desk a recording of his made at My Father's Place in Roslyn in 1979. So he was around.....

Never heard of him. No surprise there, I'm still catching up with so much.

Rory sounds like punk Danzig with an emphasis on the phaser.

    GAL-uh-her?

I had never heard of him before I saw him open for Rush in 1982. I found out later that they had opened for him years earlier. Been a fan ever since. I agree with Houdi Elbow. He always seemed like a very decent fellow.

I’ve never lived anywhere but the US and Rory was a staple of mine and of several of my friends through high school in the mid-70s.

I didn't hear of him until after he had stopped playing in the U.S. One of my classmates saw him open for Rush. Watching live vids of him on Y'Tube, I see I really missed out. Nobody but Rory could work a crowd like that. Brilliant.

He was a very accomplished acoustic player too. Legend doesn`t do him enough justice.
