Oh naughty naughty antstrat shame on you you crap distributor you!

It's really odd, since I whipped out my 01 rosewood Am Std from the bowels of the closet, fresh strings/setup/intonate it's struck me that it's been nothing but maple for the last decade. I re-fell in looooove with the rosewood board. It just feels like......it feels like this:

I'm channeling the spirit of Julie Andrews as we speak. If I only had a nice dress I'd twirl around my yard and sing sing sing. The neighbors think I'm weird anyways so I doubt the cops would be called.

SRV = Rosewood, so Rosewood it is.

I do prefer the feel of a maple neck. My next Strat will probably have a Maple neck to complement my American Professional with a Rosewood neck.

Having both is best, it eases having to decide.

I used to, when I started out ... only like maple boards (solid necks) but I knew nothing about what was going on outside of I liked how they looked. My favourites now are a variety ... ebony, rosewood and even Indian laurel. I have a couple of maple ones too.

Being a guy who has played a maple neck/fretboard strat for 20 years all I knew is that people on the internet said that maple was brighter and rosewood was darker... One day I finally went to Guitar Center and compared two identical strats with different fretboard material and also two Mitchells.

The only difference I could discern was that the maple had an immediate percussive attack, while the rosewood's attack was not quite as "hard" or immediate.
I could hear no tonal variation there in Guitar Center in my low volume 30 second test.

Has anyone else observed the same difference? Or am I crazy? :)

I bought my strat in 1997 because of SRV. His #1 was rosewood, but he used his red and yellow guitars with maple fretboards for the clean songs like Lenny and Riviera Paradise. And I think the yellow one had a massive swimming pool route. Stevie could have made a dog turd sound amazing (but it would still smell bad). :)

I don't hear any difference, never have and not until the internet did I know I was supposed to.

Rosewood just feels a tad different to me but not enough to make a huge difference. This thread, I'm just having some fun ;)

Yes, I’ve seen some videos of SRV playing Maple neck Strats. They all sounded great when he played them.

You play guitar. You must be crazy, even if it's only a little bit.

I had an all rosewood Harrison Tele. Brightest snappiest Tele I ever owned. Rip your head off bright. Swapped out the 1meg pots for 250k...still rip your head off bright.

So...it depends on each individual guitar. Maple is not always brighter than Rosewood. Rosewood is not always darker sounding than maple.
