20211010_180840.jpg 20211010_181623.jpg Took my 10 year old son to his first concert tonight, to see Popa Chubby.
Great playing and ambience, but really bad sound after the first couple of songs (seems that 2 songs was the allotted warm-up time for our ears). Sounded like every instrument and vocal was pushed through a compressor in Maximiser mode, killing all the subtlety and dynamics of the show, and turning the whole thing into a super loud instrument soup. A real shame.
We went looking for (and found) earplugs when the band took a 20 minute break at the hour mark. Honestly should have taken a set for me and my kid beforehand, but forgot.

He is a solid player. I do wish though bands any band would learn volume control with today's Pa systems you shouldn't need to hurt peoples ears and melt their faces. I don't go to any concerts without ear plugs now.

Bad Sound guys can really ruin a top-notch performer’s show.

"Sweet Goddess of Love and Beer" is a great tune. I haven't been to many concerts lately but the last one I went to was way too loud. Definitely taking ear plugs from now on.

Bummer about the sound. He's a great player. Wish the boy had a more memorable 1st concert experience. But who knows? Maybe he'll take an interest in being a sound guy, once he hears a show with the sound mixed right.

The man gives me hope - if those fingers can do that, I have no excuse.

Well as it turns out, I am a sound guy, so I'm sure he's getting plenty of inspiration (or bad ideas) from me LOL (but I don't mix music, I'm a mixer for movies and TV).
He was really happy coming out of the concert, so I think it went well for him regardless of the sound quality.

I saw he was playing the Olympia, glad you had a good time.
I was supposed to see Patti Smith at the Grand Rex on Saturday but a nasty cold ruined my weekend (still not great).

Ran into him at an Indian restaurant in Montreal about 3 yrs ago during the Montreal Jazz festival. Wonderfully nice and amiable person. Had no clue about what an amazing guitarist he is until I saw a bunch of YouTube vids.

Many years ago, we went to a Robert Palmer concert and it was the same as you described. We left after the second song. Worst I ever heard.

Popa is probably my favorite guitarist. One of the few these days I'd pay to see. I'd want to elbow the sound man aside and mix it myself.

I went to a Stones show back around 2000 or so. Pretenders opened for them. I'm a big Pretenders fan but the sound quality was terrible. Just awful. Unlistenable.

Stones came on. Incredible. Perfect. Same sound system in the arena, obviously. It all came down to the sound engineer(s).

I've seen Popa Chubby three times at the Blue Note Grill in Durham NC. All three shows were very good. He's a real pro who has played with many big name stars. Luckily the sound did not have the problems you described, although it was loud. I always use ear plugs or balls of tissue, depending on just how loud a show is, and they came in handy for Popa and his band. I fairness to him, for the last two shows we sat front and center and were as close to his blackface Vibrolux as we could be. The place you saw him must have been huge for him to have all that amplifier behind him. He told me that at some of the places he plays in Europe he used two Twins and a Marshall. I see that much amp in your photo.

Loudest show I remember ever being at was The Melvins... I was there to see Primus. Damn The Melvin's were loud.
