AI 'godfather' Geoffrey Hinton warns of dangers as he quits Google

Right now, they're not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. But I think they soon may be. Make no mistake, we are on a speeding train right now, and the concern is that one day it will start building its own tracks.

Can’t wait for the day we each have our own MRI machine. Oh, wait, there is not enough helium for that, too much was wasted on birthday balloons
Yea can't believe they still use it for balloons.
Ban AI now.

When humans understand it better and how to keep it confined then allow limited use.
The trouble is, even if it is banned in here, everyone else will definitely charge ahead. Kinda dammed if you do dammed if you don't.

Such a cliche we have heard describe technology before but AI can evolve on it's own. Once it has that capability, Pandora's Box will not only have been opened, but thrown against the walls and smashed apart never to be a container again. No way to predict what if any restraint it will have.

Fortunately, the North American power grid is held together with rusted bolts, bailing wire, and duct tape...lots of duct tape.

All we have to do to pull the plug is to ... send it to Ted in accounting, formerly with Enron! Or just turn on the toaster and microwave at the same time.

The death machines will rust while waiting for the authorization to proceed to step 451...

On to happier thoughts...
Qauntum Microscopy has arrived...

Briefly, the size of stuff we can look at using a microscope is limited to one half the wavelength of the illuminating medium...if it's light that would be blue light, if we don't want to damage whatever we're looking at, ultraviolet if we don't care...

which is why electrons (and now x-rays) make such a bad ass illumination medium ... because the wavelengths utilized are really short...

But some really smart people figured out how to do some really cool quantum stuff to cut the wavelength of light in half...

Now it's still not as small as electron or x-ray microscopy but ....
But....

"We"(meaning they because I had nothing to do with it that I am aware of just went from 4000 angstrom to 2000 angstrom resolution with light microscopy!

This is really cool sh!t.

[ In case you missed it, in a life before the life before...when I wasn't trying to explain Newton's contribution in classical physics to a lecture hall full of bright shining faces between 8 and 9:15 AM, and demoralized & disillusioned zombies at the end of their workday from 6:30 to 8PM every Monday, Wednesday & Friday...

...I was driving an electron microscope in order to keep the flow of DoD dollars coming to a university near you...if you lived near me ]

This means that getting that nasty little sliver out of your thumb will, one day, be easier. Providing AI (i.e. Skynet) lets y'all have a "one day"...(I'll be long gone so I've stopped worrying.

This so completely sucks for them...it truly is a sadness.
But at least there isn't some person who has an asterisk on their CV highlighting their failure to convert between an internationally accepted unit of measurement and the weird voodoo we do.

Their asterisk highlights not putting enough gas in the tank or being a little too lead-footed.

That makes sense considering the boots they have to wear.
