In the market for a guitar, so I've again taken to trawling Gumtree/FB Marketplace. I had forgotten how entertaining it is, in a scratch-your-head-and-wonder kind of way.

So, assuming I'm not the only person who gets a strange kick out of the weird and wonderful classifieds, here's a thread for those ads that make you shake your head and go 'WTF?'.

Here's one from the Minimalist School ... no photo, no description. With the added twist of a touch of menace.

    "Pick up by yourself."??

I'll pass. Not inclined to end up in some potential psycho's stew pot over a guitar he doesn't even have the courtesy to show me a picture of............:D

And now for a lesson in how not to treat a potential customer. Guy's got a lovely '93 Orville by Gibson reasonably priced (US$1600) so I politely ask if still for sale and get the cranky, condescending response below. I'm tempted to look anyway but a bit put off by the attitude.

There’s just a large number of social weirdos in the world. They don’t know how to talk to people and don’t treat folks like yourself who are clearly being polite with any respect. I also really enjoy the people that take 12-15 hours to respond in an actual conversation. Really? In this day and age you are really too busy to look at your phone and type a couple of words to let me know you’re there? No excuse for it.

May very well be that he was being "strongly encouraged" to sell it and he really doesn't want it to go... it's just listed so in a few months he can say "Look, I've been trying to sell it for 6 months and there's just no interest because it's not a Gibson"
    Especially when you're a stranger ;)

IMHO, if that's the response you get from a simple inquiry, I'd avoid this seller. Imagine how ugly it might get dealing with the sale, shipping, insurance, etc. And once you get it, if the guitar is not as advertised ...

It could be even worse if you meet the seller in person.

I recently passed up a good deal on a nice acoustic. In fact, the seller had two of the same model, and I was considering buying both. After I agreed to his asking price and arranged to meet in his area, which would have been an hour's drive each way for me, he sent me a relatively hostile message about not trying to lowball him.

Lowball him? It was his price!

So I simply cancelled the meeting. As soon as I get a bad vibe from a buyer or seller, I steer clear, no matter how good the deal seems.

I sell stuff in the local classifieds. I get so many queries of the "Is it still available?" type. I can't be bothered to tell them that I wouldn't be showing it if it wasn't.

True, but @stratocarlster qualified the question by stating that it had been for sale for 3 months. Much more legitimate than the average “still available?” garbage we all deal with. :D

Right? Could you imagine dinner with the guy... "I don't answer question, you welcome to try" as he hands you a bowl of stew.

Based on the syntax in another part of the listing ("I don't answer question"), it's possible that the seller is not a native speaker of English. The intent might have been to say that the seller won't deliver the item, and that the buyer must pick it up.

I guess what I'm saying is that you might not end up in a stew after all. You might end up in a Maraq, or a Rendang, or some other dish more aligned to his culture.
