The part of the roll cage on a race car that protects the driver from things coming through the windscreen are called buzzard bars. They date from the 1952 Mexican Carrera Panamerica (put on to celebrate that country's completion of a highway from its southern border to its northern), when Mercedes Benz 300SL driven by Karl Kling and John Fitch encountered one at speed.

It went through the front and out the back windows injuring Fitch in the process.

That night the mechanics replaced the windows and fitted extra tubing in front of the driver on all 3 of their cars.

    Today is national pizza day.

In my house Sundays are pizza day.

And after World War II many pizza shops were opened using surplus dough mixers and deck ovens.

Bob Nixon, who had the ignominy of finalizing the design of the iconic AMC Gremlin and Pacer died February 5 at 86.

Dick Teague did a rough sketch of the profile of the Gremlin on the back of an airsickness bag, during a pitch on a Northwest Orient flight since he didn't have the design studies done by Nixon nor any other paper at hand, but it was up to Nixon to make it work.

From 1952 to 1964 you had to supply your own potato for Mr. Potato Head.

Barbie was released in 1959 but didn't have forward facing eyes until 1971.

Tennis balls were once filled with human hair.

In 1971 George C. Scott refused his best actor award at the Oscars for Patton. He had previously sent the academy a telegram rejecting his nomination, citing the way selections were made and his dislike of competition between actors.

2 years later Marlon Brando refused his best actor award for The Godfather, sending Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather in his place. He turned it down to protest the way first nations had been mistreated by Europeans during colonization and how they were protrayed in Hollywood.

Ever wonder why some birds like pigeons and chickens move their heads when they walk? Its to stabilize their visual surroundings when they move because they have poor depth perception.

The title of the book "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" isn't a reference to the depth under the sea, but the length of the journey of the Nautilus. 20,000 leagues (80,000 km) is nearly twice the circumference of the Earth. (NB: I've laboured all my life under this delusion)
