Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant (in Ohio! I drove past his museum today).

His father was able to secure for him an appointment to West Point.

Due to a clerical error his name was recorded as Ulysses S. Grant. Rather than risk his appointment he changed his name on the spot and would be Ulysses S. Grant from then on.

Billy Ray Cyrus, before his rise to mullet headed cheesy catchy pop, originally intended to go only by a single name- Cyrus.

His pop tart slutty daughter Miley has realized the dream of single named infamy.

There is an underground vault in Denmark containing 1 of every LEGO set ever produced.

Glad someone has their priorities straight.

Imagine if somewhere there was a factory fresh example of every Fender model ever made.

Union Major General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker is often cited as the reason prostitutes are called "hookers." The term actually predates Hooker, and is thought to refer to the numerous brothels of New York's Corlear Hook neighborhood.

Fighting Joe, however, played a part in popularizing the name. During the Civil War, prostitutes attending his Washington DC parties were called "Hooker's Division." In the field, prostitutes who followed his camp and ... ummm, attended to the needs of his soldiers, were known as "Hooker's Legions."

So while the name didn't originate with Hooker, he certainly helped the name stick!

John Sebastian, of the Lovin' Spoonful was asked to write and record the theme song for the show that would become Welcome Back Kotter, which was then simply Kotter.

He had trouble rhyming words to Kotter and wrote what becme the show's song. That name was changed to Welcome Back Kotter.

It made the charts and on this date in 1976 was at #1.
