    Holy wallet-emptying, batman..
I'm planning on changing the saddles on my Am Std from the cast things to some bent steel - the issue is that it's a lefty, with offset screws .So the only people making them seem to be Callaham.

they have a set for $45US. Perfect!
Then they informed me shipping to Australia is $40! For a $45 item that fits in a small packet. I ship small stuff here regularly, last month i had 3 sets of knobs sent, again in a small packet, for $15US.
Grrrr. And i know that S&H isn't just post cost, but that still seems extremely prohibitive..
    Rant over.

    Yikes!

Just out of curiosity, if the saddles were $75 with $10 shipping, would you have ordered them them?

very good point. Exactly the sort of thing i'd have asked!!!

    Probably!!! :)

and I probably still will.... i'd much prefer them to be $45 with $15 shipping though! Money isn't an issue, it just seemed unbalanced; lets face it, saddles are very small and light.

Shipping can be hard to predict. I am in the middle of an EBay transaction now for an item I just sold. The buyer lists an address and a PO Box. I tell him that I need to use FedEx Smartpost (which is a combination of Fed Ex Ground and USPS for the delivery leg) because regular FedEx Ground and FedEx Home delivery won’t deliver to a PO Box. The buyer makes some remark that they aren’t paying the additional $10 and that FedEx has delivered to them many times at the PO Box. I am at loss as to what I should do. They haven’t paid anything yet, but have a couple of days to do so. I guess that I will have to wait it out, but if I ship the item I don’t want to see it come back.

Wow, if they don't pay, get eBay involved. Unless in your ad it said something about the seller using buyers chosen shipping method. Sounds like they don't intend to pay you, and over 10 bucks. I guess they don't want the item that bad.

Well the latest is that they want me to ship somewhere else besides what is on the PayPal invoice. I want to give them the best rate and that is through the labeling that EBay does for shipping labels. I can’t send it to them with a doctored shipping label and expect the FedEx clerk to give me the EBay rate when they scan the box can I?

I dunno....sounds kind of fishy. If it were me, I think I would find another buyer, if that is possible.

only ship to the paypal address otherwise you void any seller protection...your buyer is a full on jerk and may be a scammer...you should file an unpaid item claim against the buyer.

A lot of smaller companies that don't do any huge volume of international shipping, will charge extra for the headache of filling out the customs forms and taking the package to the USPS.

Some countries have strange packaging rules "I'm sorry ****** does not accept packages that are completely covered in packing tape..." (I've had that happen).

It goes the other way too. StayTrem would not send me a bridge "I'm sorry, we don't ship to the States anymore..."

Right on. Last communication was payment with the shipping label addressed to their supposed correct PayPal address. I believe they straightened out the problem on their end. I got paid and will ship tomorrow pending one last confirmation on their part that their address is correct.

There's nowhere in the antipodes that stocks Callaham parts?

Doesn't seem so. A quick check at their website lists dealers in the US, Europe and Japan. It might be worth the OP's effort to check shipping fees from Japan and Europe as well.

In Oz, better to replace the whole thing with a gotoh 510 than import saddles. Sad/true.

Yeah, I’m tempted to go down the aftermarket bridge route... what are gotoh 510s like, any good?

Needs to be 2 point mount, with pressed saddles, ideally, not a fan of the cast ones.

    Of course!

I actually have a set of saddles in transit as we speak. I was disgusted with a $6 shipping fee on a $19 set of saddles (I'm so spoiled by Amazon Prime's free shipping!), so I can only imagine how I would have reacted to a shipping tab that was 88% of the cost of the item.
