I came across this strat and I can buy this for 500 CAD or 390 USD. What do you think about this purchase? Am I overpaying for this strat?
Is the 2007 strat have the same quality as the 2010s Made in Mexico strat? Will the guitar and the pickups be any good?
What are some things I have to consider before buying this guitar?
What are some things I have to examine of the guitar when buying?
I also have another guitar but that's a 2016 MIM strat should I buy that one instead of this one? Screen Shot 2021-11-27 at 5.16.09 PM.png

Decent guitar... I think 350 is fair for that... maybe you can haggle them. How much is the 2016?

Ya, sounds like a fair price if it's in good shape.

I tried haggling, he won't budge a bit. 2016 is around 430-450 USD. But will there be a discernable difference?

2007 should be the same specs as anything throughout the 2010s. I wouldn’t pay 390 for it but it’s a reasonable price

    Not so much.

There were "upgrades" in 2008, and 2012.

They are all good, but 2012-2018 were the arguably the best of the breed, then they were discontinued to make room for the Player Series, and their coinciding price increase.

IMO a 2007 MIM Standard can be a good guitar, and in todays market $390 is not bad.

I have a 2016 plus top and a 2020 and 2021 player. The neck on the 2016 is chunkier and just feels better. The pickups on the newer players are much better then the originals that came on the 2016. FWIW

What upgrades were made in 2008 and 2012? The only update I knew of was 2006 when they got in the bigger frets and tremolo block. As far as I know the standard series stayed the same until it was discontinued in favor of the player series.

My vote is the MIM. I'd take it to Acoustic Music on Whyte Ave for a setup.

Pet peeve: “MIM” is not a model.

All three of those Standards are similarly, if not identically, spec’d if stock. Modern C neck, ceramic pickups, etc.

I would pick whichever one is in the best condition overall, with special consideration given to neck/truss rod condition and the frets’ condition.

What do you mean truss rod condition?? How do I check that? The owner said it needed a truss rod adjustment but I'm not sure what he meant. Will it be a problem?

Tussrod adjustment is just that.. Slight tweak of the neck angle.
In any case, your guitar needs a slight setup.

Tussrod condition means, if it does what it does and ain't broken.

Slight tweak of the neck curvature, nothing to do with neck angle.

Do you have any experience with guitars and especially with setting them up? If not, you should learn with YouTube, great stuff to know. Can’t really comment on the price since Australia gets the worst deals I guess, being so far away and all, but if you like it and can afford it, why not?

I thought the big block happened in 2008. So 2006 or 2008, big block, bigger frets, upgraded pots and switch to the same as MIA.

2012, gloss fretboard (maple) and headstock, and smoother more rounded body contours and edge radius. Ceramic pickups remained until the Player series.

No, you're not right. It seems like you're really lacking in experience checking out guitars when used, knowing if the truss rod works, how to check frets etc. If you don't know, you could end up with a junk guitar that won't ever play properly, and if so I would stick to buying new....honestly....and a Squier Classic Vibe to many of us is just as good or better than a Mexico Standard Strat. Debatable, but many feel that way. Many feel the other way too.

Not at all. A new Classic Vibe would be much better value for money.
