I felt like I wasn’t getting enough volume out of my new player series SSS strat and I noticed that the pickups were factory set very low, almost flush with the pick guard.

So, I followed Fender’s recommendation for pickup height and this is what I got. Granted, I used a 1/32” ruler.

Their guideline for basic single coils (I’m guessing the player series Alnico’s are considered basic?) is 5/64” on the bass side and 4/64” on the treble side. I think I got close enough but maybe not 100%.

The guitar definitely sounds louder through my DSL40cr now, and that funky quack is still there, but I might have lost some of the woody tone from the instrument itself.

I wanted to see what yours looks like.

How close are you to Fender’s recommendation?
If you go further in any direction, higher or lower, what are the benefits or disadvantages beside magnet interference.

Here’s what mine looks like after adjustment.

I used to drive myself batty adjusting p/u's to the nth 64th with a machinist ruler. I finally took the advice of more experienced gearheads and now just use a screwdriver and my ears and it worked. I start with the p/u's as low as they can go and just slowly adjust up until I hit that "ahhhhh there it is" spot. But that's just me I don't insist that it's the right way just what works for me.

This is one our pups. His name is Roady. We named him that because they found him on the road. He's living large now.

Oh, I like my guitar pups a LOT lower than what you show in the original photo.

Mine are Texas Specials on 2017 American Special. Started at 8/6 64 at the E pole pieces, then adjusted by ear.

Those look GREAT. I really like the 'non vintage' pole stagger. :thumb:

    .

Ahhh, you must not have found the series mods yet...

I use the Armstrong Blender, some use a push/pull for middle-bridge.

Thanks. It's my own stagger I guess. The g pole is the same height as the E and A poles. Plus they are A2/A5 hybrids.

Dogs in mirror may be closer than they appear.

    :) Brillant.

Although your pole profile would take all of the fun/drama out of adjusting the poles post assembly. :p

This is how Fender Mexico set the Tex-Mex pickups in my 2018 Road Worn. I haven’t touched them, or had any reason to.

I love golden retrievers. They've been coming in pairs for me for nearly twenty years now. Right now they are two good boys. Oh. [IMG]Sorry for the hijack. Couldn’t possibly resist.
