Clifford Essex "C.E. Special" circa 1934. Yah, a UK-made banjo...my favorite for this style.

I'll be headed up to Palmyra, NY in October to the annual Fall Banjo Rally (so I'm practicing a lot). This rally was started in 1948 by players who were nostalgic for what they had played in their teens, during the 1880s-1900s. There's only about 200 of us still playing this old music in the authentic style of the period. It is just 3-finger, pre-Scruggs (actually pre-Scruggs' grandfather).

Yah, that's tab. I don't sight-read notation for the banjo. Using tab makes me sort of a pariah with this group as they actively want to promote/teach notation reading for the banjo (same way it was done back in the day). Meh. I started with tab and it is just too easy.

I'll be playing a lot of Cello Banjo there...and since it is just one or two notes per measure...I can actually sight-read the notation. It is chord stacks that I just can't deal with.

What’s the official color of that pickguard? Looks great with those pickups and knobs on black.
It’s the aged pickguard that came on the guitar along with original covers and knobs…. It’s had a lot of things done to it over the years … sold it then I bought it back, a whole Clapton circuit and pickups. Now it has the Seymour Duncan’s and a pull pot for the front pickup… to get Tele tones.. it also a feather weight…

I’ve gone to a few Estate Sales in the last few weeks. One had a box of comics marked $3.00 each for sale. So I just rummaged through it to see what was in there. I picked up 10 of them. Mostly just for age… The Roy Rogers from 1958, old Bob Kane and Bill Finger Detective Comics, the Star Treks just because….Classic Illustrated War of the Worlds (I had that one when I was little) and the Millie the Model from 1962 ( I just wanted it for something different ). I need to go to the comic shop and get some bags for them. If I’d let my inner nerd loose I’d have all sorts of stuff but I have to control myself and not buy all the Star Wars toys and other stuff… Oh I got a Avengers movie poster that I haven’t hung up yet…. As for as I know I’m still a member in good standing of the MMMS since 1966… I moved the Thor Frog sticker to the back so people can see it when I play with my teeth… 😂
