Picked these two up this week, one is a '68 the other a '74. The '68 is supposed to be bone stock other than being cleaned up by an amp tech and re-tubed, the '74 has had some type of bias mod done. I know there is a lot of hate out there for the Silverface amps, but damn these things sure sound good to me. If any body has suggestions or links to solid info on mods for these I sure would appreciate any info you have.

    I haven't seen the hate.

I have seen a lot of ignorant people dismissing amps based on myth and misinformation though :)

The drip edge 68 is likely to be identical too any of the black face examples. The 74 will likely have a change or two to make it cleaner and possibly louder.

Assuming the drip edge has blue moldeds I'd leave it stock.

A mod I have done for a ton of folks is to swap in the PT for a JTM 45 ( it bolts in!) and add a 5AR4 recto tube and it cuts down on one the power some since these are loud anyway ( with good output tubes and 2-12" drivers ) and the tube recto takes out the harshness and noise hash of the SS recto'!

This all after black facing it and if it's the horid model with the 220k feedback resistors in the output stage swapping those out for 150k resistors once the customer approves after hearing it both ways.

You shouldn't say stuff like this - this is how I stop being able to pick up awesome handwired amps for $400 while people pay $1100 for a Princeton reissue

The one above sure does look like a 70s job. Messed up wiring.

Makes a small difference sound wise I reckon.

Very nice score. The 70s one can be very easily redone to identical spec to the 68.

We need to know - they sound good? :)

Yeah, not quite as clean, and no cloth covered wire, the previous owner did a bias mod to it, not sure how much that helped but it sure sounds good. Not the typical Fender sparkly clean, some how thicker. The closed back 2x12 cab may help too.

I have personally seen the hate for the silverfaces as I owned one. (late Bassman 10) The issue with them was the master volume on the SF. Some people thought that made all the difference. However, I have heard plenty of techs talk about how the SFs were wired no different, other than the master volume. MY problem was the speakers. By the time I got mine, the paper speakers were crap. But as soon as I replaced them, the thing was amazing and I dare anyone to blind AB a silverface vs a Blackface. However, I typically do not spread that info as I like the ability to pay less for an amp that is the equal to a BF. I personally like BM10s because they are easily recut to take 2x12s which I prefer.

It was, But My point, which I can now see was not clear, was that silver faces were not so far separated that they could even remotely be called "inferior"

Definitely underrated. So yeah they make great buys. My '68 is the same circuit as most blackfaces but a lot cheaper.

I had got mine back in 99 or 2000 for about $250, now I am seeing them on reverb for up to $800. But that is still much better than dishing out the kind of money it takes for a real blackface bassman or an AVRI.

Paid $450 each, the '74 sounds great, gonna leave it alone for now. The '68 needs some love so I will run it through a good tech, but probably leave it mostly stock.
