I voted for the first 6 with Roth, but I liked Van Hagar as well. "Mine All Mine" has one of my favorite solos by EVH, and the whole track smokes. "5150" is a killer track with amazing rythm guitar and a blazing solo. "Amsterdam" is pretty darned cool too. I could go on.

Basically, I thought the hole DLR vs Hagar era thing was silly. I understand it, but I was a fan of Ed and Al first and foremost.

Yup. Like don’t tell me, And balachetherium, Amsterdam among many others no matter who the front man Eddie was alway a force to be reckoned with, no matter who was at the Mic, as I’ve said I’ve enjoyed both from and front 6 and back, just preferred the front 6 ;)

Sammy's position is unwinnable. Most bands seem to do their greatest work across their first few albums. That's when we all say, "Holy Shiitake Mushrooms! What was that?"

How could anything rise to the level of excitement we felt with early Van Halen?

I can not even imagine how hard it would be or how much gifted ability it would take to be a part of what EVH and VH did for so long, To write music in several decades and stay relevant is so rare. With that said I prefer the DLR records, but the songwriting on the Sammy stuff was so good, and evolved.

Happy Birthday Dave, and Happy Birthday Sammy in a couple of days. Saw them on Thanksgiving Day, early 90’s with Sammy, great, fun-loving show.

I voted DLR, but I really admire Sammy Hagar too. Sammy's solo career prior to Van Halen was great in its own right! I was one of the lucky ones to see the "Sans Halen" tour that both VH singers did jointly, alternating cities for which one would open/close. What a fun night!

Jack White did an Eddie Van Halen tribute on Saturday Night Live tonight. The Van Halen w/ Sammy Hagar concert I saw was actually Thanksgiving Day 1988, Portland, OU812 tour. Looked it up online, come to find out a Japanese tv show actually did some rare documentary footage of the show.

For Unlawful, "Poundcake" especially, is what made me a VH fan so I have a soft spot for the Hagar era. The "and others" is BS though, we must not speak of Cherone.
There is therefore no correct answer to this poll for me.

I like David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony.
I don't like Gary Cherone and Wolfgang Van Halen.
Love Haggar with Montrose and solo...and he did a great job for Van Halen, but was no DLR.

I voted first 6 with DLR. I love 5150 and Sammy is great but in my mind Van Halen is Eddie, Alex, David and Michael.

    Original lineup ftw !

Seen both Van Halen and Sammy Hagar shows in 1984 in the Omni Atlanta .

Sammy's show was great and Krokus was the opener .

The Van Halen show was even better though ! They blew the roof off ;)

This is a difficult choice for me.
I followed and was a fan of Sammy long before he joined VanHalen.
I enjoyed nearly everything he did before, during and after VH.

But there's no denying that David Lee Roth defines the whole VH thing.

I feel the same way. I love Sammy. He's great,in or out of Van Halen. But it really was the whole original David Lee Roth era that defined Van Halen for me.
