This is my first electric guitar that my mother bought for me back in 1995. It was used with a chip on the very thick finish on the heel.

I’ve kept it all these years and after having taken about a decade away from any serious playing I’ve decided to start playing again.

so that aside, what is this thing? I’ve been reading and asked a few questions to a few guys online but the resounding impression I get is that a picture is worth a thousand words, so here goes.

Any idea what the numbers mean on the neck or the neck pocket?

    ST-562 Contemporary Strat rosewood

The model designation is based on the neck, so yours is a 557.

No it's not, 1t's a 1985 Contemporary Strat, easily identified by the bridge, locking tree and micro-tilt neck.

It's a Contemporary Strat, just like the one I bought brand new in 1986. Except mine was white. One thing that is odd is the neck plate with a serial number. Mine had it on the headstock. Maybe it's later on and they placed on neck plate? Not sure.

    Some photos for comparison:

The serial number placement is the other way around - the very earliest ones have the serial number on the neck plate, then they move it to headstock. The Contemporary series came out in 1984 in the rest of the world, but wasn't imported to the USA until 1985 - after the company was sold from CBS to FMIC.

So it’s not a 1986 contemporary? Or we just can’t pin down the year?

It's a Contemporary but we can't pin the year down beyond 1984-85. I would assume 1985 since that's when they were first imported to the USA, but you never know (1) how long it was in Fender Japan's warehouse before being imported by Fender USA or (2) if someone got a 1984 outside the USA and brought it here.

Since they weren't imported to the USA until 1984 I don't know when in 1984 these were released to the rest of the world - if it was early 1984, mid-1984, or late 1984.
