I’ve seen both. I saw Van Halen (on their first album and tour) open for Black Sabbath. Both bands were great but I think VH was better that night.

I saw Dio with Black Sabbath years later and that was probably the better of the two Sabbath shows.

Still, both versions were great.

I heard a Dio song on the radio once a couple years ago. I thought it was one of the worst songs I ever heard. When I got home and looked it up, I learned that Dio was actually a big thing. But I thought it was terrible. I could describe why, but that’s not really necessary. Ozzy is Sabbath to me.

I prefer the version with Iommi 😉

If forced to choose I prefer the Ozzy era but damn if the Dio era didn’t breathe new life into that band; particularly after the dreck that was Technical Ecstasy. I’m happy to have both along with some of the post-Dio releases.

I’d go for Ozzy.

Both are great in their own way, but I kind of prefer the doomy monolithic vibe of the original line-up.

For an Ozzy song, I’ll pick Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (very tempted by Supernaut too, but it’s a bit “happy”).

For Dio, it’s got to be Mob Rules.

I liked all of the original Ozzy albums, but agree that they did get a bit lost towards the end, and Dio was the kick up the backside they probably needed, even if (to my mind) they lost a little bit of what made them great in the first place with him on vox.

I saw that tour too. VH absolutely wiped the floor with BS. Kinda sad really. Sabbath was a train wreck at the time

But for the topic at hand I have to go Ozzy era Sabbath. The first four albums are freaking gold
