I have to say I'm probably the world's worst lyric listener. I don't know why. It may be that as a sound guy I'm hired to mix the band not ponder lyric meaning about how I lost my dog or wife over "cowboy chords" (thank you ST member for that one :)) I'm hired to listen to each second of what the band is playing and make sure that everyone can hear everything to the best of my ability. So I can't listen to "baby baby ooooh ya" the whole song I have to be aware of everything else and maybe lots of crap coming in remotely like sequenced keys or percussion. But I dunno, I also can't remember lyrics worth a crap. I doubt there's anyone worse than me when it comes to trying to remember them. Why can I remember where to exactly place my fingers on the fretboard and can't get past 5% of any one songs' lyrics? Argh!

Anyone else has have that problem? My lovely wife says what great song such and such song is, and I cringe and go REALLY? And she says DONT YOU LISTEN TO THE LYRICS? THEY'RE AWESOME, THEY TELL A STORY!!!! And then I'm belittled to hell and gone. Meanwhile, I've been pondering how great and perfect the reverb on the snare drum was and maybe perfect guitar tone on some other tune and she could give a rat's ass about that. Funny how different we all hear things and let certain parts take over our thoughts.

Back in the pre-internet era, I had to depend on other band members to transcribe lyrics. I get distracted listening to everything else.

I usually listen to the lyrics. But also I've always been able to separate the music from the lyrics in my mind, and sometimes I think of different ideas to go along with the music. Sometimes I feel like the lyrics don't always match with the music, at least for me. And especially for songs that don't have lyrics, sometimes I feel like the music means something different to me than its title imples.

Sometimes it’s the delivery of the vocals and not the lyrics :D

If they're relevant or otherwise useful, then yes

If they follow a melody or something, fine

If they're banal but fairly innocuous I'm good

However I can tune them out pretty easily, kind of like a commercial if need be

Yes especially the Beatles, some of the greatest lyrics of all time . Other groups I like I have to look up their lyrics can’t understand a word.

The music comes first and lyrics come later if I like the music.

Absolutely! Some songs the music is good enough I’ll put up with incomprehensible lyrics (Yes comes to mind). But great lyrics add a lot of what I value in a song. Someone mentioned transcribing lyrics for a band. Back in the day, I got stuck with figuring out what the lyrics were for Radio Free Europe!

I try to listen to the lyrics, but often my attention goes back to the music. It's difficult if the singer has bad diction.

I guess if the lyrics are truly good then it will be easy to stay focused on the lyrics...like Elton John's songs.

Nope. Other than a few key words, I have no ldea what the song is "about".

It’s all about the music for me. I have a hard time remembering the lyrics for songs I wrote. When I try to listen to lyrics I rarely get all the way through a song. My head is too busy trying to figure out the changes, and what the guitar is playing, and why did they put strings here, and some horns would sound cool here, oh that bass line was cool there, ....

Okay now, true story - I posted this thread this morning and then went to the coffee shop for a coffee ( take out only). I’m sitting in the car and punch in Pandora and dial up a station. I’m listening to a Rolling Stone song and looking at the Lyrics on my phone (bluetoothed). 3 times the back up singer says “Rape! Murder!” - what??? I never heard that before and I’ve heard that song a million times and have never heard that before! Yikes! Was I not just not paying attention or what? Anyone else hear that on Gimme Shelter? Or am I just that behind the times? Unless I had the lyrics in front of me I don’t think I would have ever heard that. Now rap lyrics..... I don’t even want to go there

For Ronnie, it was both. His delivery, and the whole story of the song was genius. Depending on the song, I hear both as well
