I know this isn’t the original and today I would probably prefer the Springsteen version, but I was six years old when this was the number one song in the US and it was on the radio all the time. The single was the first record I ever bought and I played it on my Mickey Mouse record player that used his arm to hold the needle on the record. Later that year my dad installed a stereo in our family van with speakers in the back. I remember the day he finished installing it and turned it up with this song playing on the radio. I stood in the back of the van, right in the middle, and heard true stereo for the first time in my life.

I still smile every time I hear this song.

you sure you got the math right? Manfred Mann released the song in 1977, I was 17 and based on the age under your avatar that would have made you 18.
Springsteen released the original in 73.... you were 6 years old in 1965 no?:whistling::p
    Sorry I over analyze stuff...

edit: clearly I’m Also unable to read ... you are 48 right? (Rolls eyes at self)

Yep. I was referring to the Manfred Mann version, but I realize now how what I said was a little unclear. They released the song in 76 and it hit number one in feb 77. I turned 7 later that year. And 50 this year.

I’ve really enjoyed this thread. I’ve pulled up this song and that’s led into an evening of Bruce Springsteen. And memories of camping in the van with my family. All putting a smile on my face.

Also , in looking up these dates, I saw Manfred Mann’s Earth Band classified as Prog Rock. I never thought of it that way myself, but maybe that explains my affinity for Pink Floyd, Yes, and Genesis.
