I love a good song. Doesn't have to be complex. Just has to hit all the right spots.

Dave Alvin is a genius at this. While on a break from the Blasters...he hung out with X. He gave them one of his greatest tunes.

John's vocals are killer. Even Exene is great. And Tony's guitar...just perfect.

Another one. Robert Earl Keen. Damn he can write a song. And Joe can deliver. This one reminds me of @heltershelton. :D

And Grissom's guitar work is sublime.

I Like Dave. Great player, and I think his secret strength is his voice. He's one hell of a vocalist.

West Of The West is one of my all time favorites for long late night drives.

Back in the day...I spent lots of time with Phil and Dave. They were like the Downey Everly Bros.

To me...Dave is one of the great American songwriters. That's kinda why I went with the X version rather than his own. :)

Here’s one I admire so much. Every part of this record is a hook.

Wasn't familiar with the first song but thought it had a sort of Rockpile soundvibe to it, so went and looked and Nick Lowe produced. really enjoyed that one.

First time I heard this song I honestly got goose bumps. I need to be by myself whenever I listen to it, eyes shut so my whole body can absorb the vibe. Her voice, the musicians, whoever produced this...damn.

Great post, Fezz. I’m glad you pointed out Exene’s vocals; this is possibly the best vocal performance in her career. I always loved her voice, but she can’t ever be accused of being the most consistent singer. Great song and great performance.

You're not alone. It has something like the same effect on me. It's deeply entrenched in my playlists.

    songs.
    @heltershelton .
umm, if I were to pick a song that sorta go with the persona...tough call...the persona runs deep I think.

both by a fellow named John Eddie. Another favorite for long distance drives late at night...Both speak of a healthy approach to life I think...

This one's lyrics are a bit rough...
but then so is life. Something HS knows all too well I think.
    Think'n of y'all Kelly...but in a good way.

I don't think Nick had anything to do with that X record...

I've mentioned this one before. Karla Bonoff. And one of the great interpreters...Linda.

Speaking of Nick Lowe...a great songwriter singing one of Nick's tunes.

One of my favorite song-writers and a helluva performer as well (despite being a fellow Aggie). Saw him live five or six times when I was in Texas, including twice with Lyle Lovett (another great writer).
Lately I've been enjoying REK's "Americana" podcast.
