I can get a used American Special for $750. It’s in almost new condition. Or I could get a new player series Strat. Which one do you guys think would be a better deal.

I'd buy the Special all day long. American made and I love jumbo frets. The Texas Special pickups are quite nice as well.

I have played expensive and cheap guitars I want to have and ones I would never want...

I paid to much for a used PRS 20 years ago. I found out I got boon-swaggled on the price, but I just put it's 3rd set of frets in it cuz I still love to play it !

I have a Tele I paid less than I set my budget for. I play it as much as the PRS and it cost much less than the PRS.

Dance with both of the Strats and the one you want to dance with again is the one.

From my experience I would take the Player over a special anyday. Those player guitars are some seriously fine axes

From the value perspective, the Special would hold it better, but playability might be a different story...

Seems high for a special. Can usually find an am std at that price.

    I'd go Player, as well.

you can get one on this site right now for quite a bit less, under 700. There's a candy cola finish one for sale here.

if you bought a used Special for 750, you'd be overpaying by at least 150 dollars, IMO.

Like previous poster said, that is American Standard (model above it) money.

Well, there are other factors to consider: does it have a hard case, is it rosewood or maple (the former might increase in value over time due to SITES), etc.

Thanks for the responses. It’s a normal maple board. Pretty plain Jane. I agree it’s prob a bit overpriced for a special. Plus I’m not a big fan of the 12” radius. I think I’ll go with the player.

Am Special should have a 9.5" radius FB. Like-new price should be ~$650 and at that price would a much better buy than the Player. The Player resale value will be sub $500 as soon you take possession.

I have a Player Strat in Buttercream/maple and an American Special Tele (same neck as the Strat), in Sherwood green/rosewood, and both are fine instruments. You have to like the jumbo frets on the Special, but the pickups are great. It's just a shame about that honking great headstock on the Strat. The Player is a very good upgrade over the previous MIM Standard, and it's as close in spec to the old American Standard as makes no difference (neck, frets, hardware, trem/bridge, pots, switch). Very nice guitar.

I think the mim player is a more attractive buy.
Reading the reviews and specs, I don't think you can beat it with a special.
And honestly, I don't see much if any difference between the mim player, and the American standard/professional.

Well I just ordered a Black / Pau Ferro MIM Player to sit alongside my 2017 Sunburst / Rosewood MIA Special. Can hardly wait to compare the two side by side.
