The “Stratocaster”. Will there ever be a better name given to an electric guitar? Coined in the 50’s, can’t do it again, it’s a one-off, and it has stood the test of time. The name is credited to Don Randall in the Fender marketing department in 1953, he was a pilot and aviation enthusiast. I think it’s pure genius. When I plug in my electric guitar and turn up the volume, what do I want to do? Well...I wanna cast the sound straight up into the damn stratosphere, that’s what I wanna do!!! I’m gonna go plug one in and try to get there now. Happy Friday!
I agree. Plus, when you shorten it to Strat, it sounds like Strad, as in Stradivarius. Seems like that too stood the test of time.
Telecaster is pretty good. So is the Explorer. Strats are great guitars. Like Beck says, there's nothing that a Strat can't do. Nothing. Except what a Tele with a wiggle stick can do.
To me the Telecaster is a classic, simple, straight-forward tool. And it doesn't have that useless middle pickup. LOL
Fair enough, and each to his own of course, but I enjoy the “quack” positions and even play the middle pickup by itself at times when I want a bright cutting lead sound. The only strat position I almost never use is the bridge by itself. From a purely aesthetic point of view, for my tastes, the tele is a Studebaker and the strat is a Corvette.
Firebird is stronger, but I think clunky and heavy. When I think strat, it's 100% ergonomics. Not the sounds, the quack. I enjoy those things too, but the design rules all others, just crazy good. Not designed by man, IMO. It was a gift...
To my ears Quack is a gimmicky ubiquitous sound. No personality. All plink and no thunk. Part of it is that I was a Tele player before the Strat. I got my first Tele in '71. My first Strat in '79. My first keeper Strat in '83. I've got four Strats and love them...one I'll never get rid of. But best guitar name period? Switchmaster is pretty damn cool. So is Broadcaster. Or Esquire. Or Firebird.
At least they were more creative than Gibson. Let’s name this model after this dude and then when he doesn’t want his name on it anymore, yeah let’s go with “Solid Guitar” that sounds good
My first guitar was a Strat. I think maybe we tend to lean toward what we learned on. When I need some grunt though, it’s a Tele. Tele straight into an amp, or Strat with a couple pedals. It’s easier to leave the pedalboard at home.
Teles can be so beautiful clean. This is my wiggle stick Tele: Bridge pickup on both tracks. I learned on a 64 Teisco. In 1964. Getting that Tele seven years later was like...perfection.
Mustang, Jaguar and Jazzmaster, Country Gentleman. White Penguin, Falcon, Jet... but Rickenbacker - that is just a cool name, period. Don't need to play the numbers game - otherwise we'd be saying 335, 355, 325, 360/12....
TBH, I never thought about it, but now you mention it, yes, Stratocaster is undoubtedly the coolest guitar name ever, for a model of guitar. For an individual guitar, the best name is Lucille because of the story behind it. Sent from my Phone using Tapatalk
