Ive noticed lately that a lot of newer indie musicians are using Teles/Jaguars/Mustangs and not many Strats. Teles fly off the rack at my local indie music store, but Strats hang around for a long time. It's funny, cause it used to be that Teles were mostly associated with country/Americana stuff and Strats with blues/rock. I think Strats are now associated with "uncool" big rock stars like Clapton/Gilmour/Malmsteen, etc. I know trends change, its no big deal to me as I love all Fenders, I just thought it was interesting. Heres a link to JD McPhereson talking about his gear and his recent revelations about Strats. Worth a view as he makes great records:

Even Margaret Glaspy used a Strat on her great album "Emotions And Math", but uses a Tele given to her by Julian Lange live.

The way an instrument looks is so important to the image they project. Whether you like it or not, if you see a strat, certain music or bands come to your mind instantly. So when you want to escape that, you look towards instruments that don’t conjure up memories. I look at a Fender Mustang and don’t hear or picture anyone. I have no idea what they even sound like. That’s attractive to me, I would probably play differently with one than I do when I pick up my Strat. I’m sure that this is probably one reason hipsters are attracted to these guitars, they probably feel like it won’t influence them to sound a certain way perhaps?

I too always thought of tele’s as pure country guitars. I’d love to get one because I don’t know how to sound even remotely country, so I’d probably sound different on one than I do on my Strat or Lester. That could be a good thing!

I think your observations are correct, but I suggest a simpler explanation: Strats are just super beautiful. Regardless of paint/finish, they are curvy and lovely. I think people just don't want a pretty guitar for some kinds of music.

A tele has become my #1 after playing strats forever. Still have five strats though.

I think you'll find that strats haven't been cool since the 70s. Punk bands didn't use strats.

Hank Marvin made the strat cool in the 60s, but after Hendrix, well...

Teles have always been cooler than strats.

    ;)

I'm not sure of the fear of association so much as someone just flat flat out wanting something different.

Leo was even going to get rid of the Strat at one point, so I doubt it will become 100% uncool.

Kids love the Root Strats right now:

You say "I think Strats are now associated with "uncool" big rock stars like Clapton/Gilmour/Malmsteen, etc.", and you base the popularity of a guitar on what indie musicians are using? Thats just hilarious!! (just my opinion)

They really are. Can you think of any other manmade product that has such enduring beauty? I can’t. I can stare at my Strat for hours. They are just so beautiful from every angle.

I have a two tone burst partscaster and I really can't play it for punk. :D

I never thought I would play a Strat. I played a Custom Shop Jackson Dinky for 25 years, but I was so burned out on that sound I hadn't picked up the guitar in forever.

I had $100 credit for selling CDs at Hastings and couldn't find anything I wanted, so I bought a Squier Strat.

Changed my life!! So many sounds and tones I had never heard beneath my fingers.

I got way back into the guitar to the point I became a guitar teacher.

    God bless Leo Fender!

"Guitar Rock" is pretty much just indie nowadays.

I just looked at the Billboard top 100 and only a single guitar rock act on the charts.

I’ve been around long enough to remember a few times Strats were not cool... I even fall for it at least one of them. Now I’m just “Good play something else you big dummy”.

Strats and their variations are about the most copied guitars on the planet......maybe the actual ones with the fender logo have an off period right now(i dont really know but lets say you are right) but in general that form is everywhere and for good reason.....sound,looks,playability.....if one guitar should not worry about its...essence disappearing so to speak..that would be the strat.
