“The reason lighter gauge strings have a bigger sound is not the string size, but the tension on the string. Less tension causes the string to vibrate a much wider circle & much longer. More sustain. In a blind test, subjects were asked which string gauge they were hearing, 8, 9, 10, or 11. Almost all picked 8 ga as 11s. Also, the very origin of the metal sound came by accident by Tony Iommi because of the missing tips of his 2 middle fingers. This caused him to try lighter strings & lower tuning. He uses 7 gauge strings because of the lower tension. I think he used a banjo string at first for the hi E. But thats where that massive early Black Sabbath distortion came from.”

Point being, is that you do NOT have to use heavy strings for a bigger/thicker sound.

I'm using a custom .007-.009-.013-024-.030-.036 set on my Strat and they sound awesome. Best thing is my ham-fisted brethren never want to borrow it.

Let me tell you a story- one time, Billy gibbons, Jeff beck and Jimi Hendrix were all hanging out with bb king and each wanted to take a turn playing his famous Lucille. They did and each was shocked to find that it had no strings at all. Turns out, bb's just been making the sounds with his mouth all these years- that's why he doesn't play leads at the same time he's singing. Ever since then, those cats all went to light strings. They wanted to go completely stringless, but it wouldn't have worked for their styles.

And if you're looking for a darker sound you need a black guitar

    True story!
When you get to the level of BB King and you are one with the Blues... You realize that you can't be shackled by strings. You are at the point where you don't need strings at all.

I was once sneered at by a guitar center employee when I asked to purchase some .007's, I felt as though I weighed 90 pounds and was getting sand kicked in my face by this corporate string gaugist.

Nope, as long as it's tone-wood. In this scenario though, a Dumble amp and Klon pedal are a must.
