Rocket 88 was recorded there...the first rock and roll record. Birth place of rock.

One of the most moving moments I’ve ever had was standing in the studio while the tour guide played the scratchy recording of the first time that any radio station played an Elvis record.

And I’m not even an Elvis fan. (I’m a bigger Jerry Lee Lewis fan.)

But the sheer weight of all the music history in that tiny space was palpable.

Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, U2...and too many others to count.

It is an almost sacred place.

Memphis used to be home. My youngest daughter and I made a road trip to town in November, and stopped by there. Here’s my 25 year-old on the sidewalk.

Like Leo, Sam did it right from the get go. He always said his most important discovery was recording Howlin’ Wolf. The guy who made Elvis Elvis said Howlin’ frickin’ Wolf was his best.
