I want a tele... hear them on youtube and am blown away... You guys got any recommendations? on where to start? I want that traditional Tele Tone, I just don't want to make a rookie mistake, in case I buy online and can't play first.

What makes a Tele sound like a Tele? Is it the pups? Wood? I know a Les Paul and Strat are very wood/pickup oriented.

I have a MIM Standard Tele, Put a cheap but GREAT OV Tele pickup in the bridge (used, from a great guy at TDPRI forum), and It's all I'll ever need, as far as Teles go.

if you get a squier and put a good pickup in it (or even if you don't) it will sound like a Tele,

If you can find a used Baja Tele, I think you’ll be very pleased.

You get all the normal Tele tones, and a few more to boot, because of the 4 way switch and S1 circuitry.

Get a strat, you can get it to sound the same and you will have a vibrato to boot.

Or buy a MIM Tele, inexpensive and pretty good.

Stick with the original bridge and neck pickup setup. No variations. Between Fender, Squier, and G&L you should be able to find something you like at a price you like.

What makes it sound like it does? Everything but the biggest influence will come from the pickups which is why I suggest sticking with models that offer the two it was designed with.

    It's all of the above.

MIM 50s Classic, Vintera, American Vintage, AVRI, and American Original are the "can't make a rookie mistake here" product lines. Of those, Vintera and American Original are still being made. So it depends on how much you wanna spend, whether you want rosewood vs maple board, and what color you want.

Do what I did - get a Ron Kirn T. The only one I've ever played that felt and sounded better was a $5K Custom Shop Masterbuilt...

A while back, I bought a new Player Series, LPB Tele to go with my "traditional", Butterscotch Tele. The new Tele had the flat bridge plate that I just didn't like, so I ordered a traditional Fender Tele Bridge assembly for it, and luckily it bolted right into place without having to "custom fit" anything. I stayed with the original Alnico 5 pickups, and it now has become one of my favorite guitars!

This is it. In the value market, either of these are incredible. I have a Paisley sitting here, and it is light as a dadgum FEATHER with a nice big maple neck(yet no neck dive)and incredible pickups.
