I want to put a set of Fender Texas specials in one of my Strats.

I noticed the SD Texas Hot, Lollar Special T, Fralin Blues Special, and a host of similar Texas Blues pickups.

Does anyone have experience with one or more of these alternatives that can make a recommendation?

I have a tele that came w Fender Texas Specials. I like it a lot but I personally think the hot bluesy snarl is more suited for a smooth Strat.

I want the big full SRV and John Mayer tone.

I personally have always liked the SD Jeff Beck pickups and they are pretty versatile. I've had Lollars and for the price I wasn't impressed, I had Fralin's too and they were a bit better but still liked the Beck pickups the best.

Actually, "hot" pickups are not really right for the SRV/Mayer sound - the exact opposite, really.

Their tone came/comes from lower output, lower resistance value pickups, which allowed them to run their amps up louder - combined with at least medium gauge strings and the sound is big and full but still very clear.

    That's my point. You can't.

I've had them in my strat for the last 6 months, and I have no plans to change them.

If I didn't have so many pickup sets looking of a home already, I'd snatch those up in a minute.

I actually think the Tex Mex pickups are pretty darn good. I have a guitars with both Tex Mex and Tex Specials. They don't sound the same but both are hotter strat pups. I can't say the Texas Specials are better, just different. I like the Tex Mex bridge pick up better. it's not as harsh but I like the Texas Special neck pickup better. Also have strats with early 80's dimarzios (I don't know what model) Fat 50's and a Robert Cray set. The Robert Crays are probably my favorite and I'm pretty sure they came out of a MIM Cray strat.
Maybe give the Tex Mex a shot, they're a great value.

I have a guitar with SD Texas Hots - they are really great pickups. Gritty, warm, mellow and they are SRV- like. The bridge is overwound and sounds good

Don’t hesitate to buy a set

You haven't changed your underwear for the last 6 months either.

There's an image in my head that no amount of electrical current will erase. I am truly afraid at the moment.

Sorry @3Strat for derailing your thread :D

I like Texas Specials btw, just adjust the height until you find the sweet spot and you'll be happy.

What pickups are in it now?

You can get any Strat tone with any Strat pickups with any amp. Playing style is the elephant in the room.

That said, if you want to test the water, start with the Tex-Mex set. Inexpensive, and approved by Jimmie Vaughan for his MIM signature Strat.

Rio grande pickups are made in texas. They have that texas sizzle to much of their line
