let's just say the irony was not lost on me.
well it sure isnt grooming related!
Credit, where credit's due.
Good call, Fezz!
Leosounds in Germany makes an unpotted set of PAF style pickups, they sound great!
Do you have a why?
Unpotted pickups are livelier. Dip a 16p nail in wax until it's completely coated and let it dry. Drop it on a cement floor.
Now drop a nail on the floor with no wax on it.
One will be lively...one will be dull. One will ping...the other will thud.
So does Seymour Duncan. Seth Lovers.
So did some guy in this thread.
Gonna call my band Ludicrous Gain if you promise not to sue.
I can totally relate. There was a time I was putting Super Distortions (or similar) on everything, it was some kind of trend. For years my humbucker guitar was useful only for a very narrow scope of what I played, I could never dial it for anything else and make it sound nice, so I ended up playing the strat instead all the time.
Then I rediscovered the PAF humbucker and saw that it shimmers as sparkles in a way the SD can't. And I could still get monster sounds out of it if I wanted. Never had an issue with the microphonic squeal. My humbucker guitar became as versatile as the strat, so from there on I only use low impedance alnico unpotted pickups in my humbucker guitars.
Potted buckers have their place, but that place is outside of what I enjoy playing most of the time.
The first time I ordered a Bareknuckle PAF type pickup I noticed they gave an option for potted or unpotted. I thought I'd give the unpotted a try. I'll never use a potted humbucker again if I can help it. As already said, the difference is night and day.
Not that it does
Why does this happen?
Is it one of the sweet mysteries of life
Would one say the wax potting is to the windings in a pickup that palm muting is to your strings?
This SG I got a few months ago makes a big deal out of it having unpotted pickups. I thought they all were potted or dipped to prevent micro phonics or squealing at stage volumes. They do sound good. Very lively and bright for humbuckers. I’m a real single coil guy but this SG just knocked me out….
Yeeps that's sexy.
The two guitars I use most, Heritage 535 and Gibson Flying V have unpotted pickups.
Only as a last resort.
My high gain is most gainster's clean
It's far worse.
