The Monkees where my musical equivalent to Santa isn't real. I was innocent, wore collared shirts to school, clean cut...and then...

I saw a picture of them in the studio with...studio musicians recording their parts. I was devastated. I woke up in the alley behind the pool hall smelling of cheap soda and candy cigarettes...

Tried to tell people, they just aren't as raw and real as the Splits, plus no "oh oh chongo" with the Monkees.
    So real...

I dragged my parents down to Atlantic City, NJ to see the Splits at their convention center - late 60s. ~10 years before the casinos were there.

Think we arrived a bit late. It was SRO near the entrance to the hall. I recall being disappointed. We made the best out of the day. Lots to see back then.

Got to see the famous diving horse. Essentially a horse forced to walk the plank diving 40' into a 12' deep pool.

Not cool, but I was far too young to get that.

Yeah, pretty awful. In the early - mid 70s AC and the Steel Pier were no longer much of a draw. That effectively stopped the horse shows. The Casinos came in the late 70s.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diving_horse

"A horse diving show was an in-residence act held at New Jersey's Steel Pier. Pressure from animal rights activists and declining demand led to the act being shuttered in the 1970s. Although there was a brief resumption of the act at the pier in 1993, it was again shut down amid opposition. The horses sometimes dove four times a day, seven days a week. An attempt in 2012 to revive the shows at Steel Pier was halted when animal welfare advocates petitioned the owners not to hold the shows. The president of the Humane Society of the United States stated: "This is a merciful end to a colossally stupid idea."

Back in 1974 I threatened to quit my job if they didn't let me go see the Monkees show I had already bought tickets for. They gave in.
