The wire was just a little bit tighter.

I am very much looking forward to it - Gandolfini's son is supposed to be great, not just because he's his father's son, but they say he really owns the role.

Problem is, my wife has never seen The Sopranos - rather than divorce her for that transgression, I will give her a chance to redeem herself. But now we need to decide - do we:

    A) Binge the series (it's only six seasons, we can bang that out in a few weeks), then go back and watch the movie, or

    2) Watch the movie (it's a prequel so technically it comes first) then do the series

My preference is option 2, but I suppose I need to consider her wishes. I would not mind re-visiting the whole series first if we go with number A.

Since it’s a prequel, option 2 makes plenty of sense.

Plus if the movie is a let down for diehard Sopranos' fans, she'll enjoy the series more. Now if the movie is really bad then you'll have a hard time convincing to get to the series...

Might be good to watch the prequel first in this instance. The series was mostly great. I've binged through it several times.

New Jersey has a fair amount of open space on either side of the corridor between Philly and NYC. South Jersey is more wide open and has a different vibe to the densely settled North.

The Pine Barrens is a lightly populated pine forest. A state park is part of it. There are some marshy areas, especially closer to the ocean.

IIRC, I think were only two scenes that took place in the Pine Barrens, one by name and one by suggestion.

I agree, but I think they knew the movie would have to be somethin' special in order to be on par with the series.

I read that he was a real gangster before his acting career.

Having expectations based on The Godfather(s) will prevent appreciating The Sopranos for what it is, and it's not like The Godfathers(s), at all. It's the unglamorous drudgery of low-level mob life for sociopaths who aren't satisfied and can't be happy. Nothing is romanticized.

He took acting lessons in prison and when released was on his way. You'll see him a wee bit in Goodfellas along with Big P Bumpensaro as well as Michael Imperioli (Christopher)

David Chase, the creator of the Sopranos is really pissed that it's on tv. He said it was supposed to be a movie.

DEADLINE: It is kind of ironic that here you make a theatrical film based on the iconic HBO series, and it’s coming out day-and-date on something with HBO in the title. What did you feel when that edict came down?

CHASE: Extremely angry, and I still am. I mean, I don’t know how much you go into this, you know, like…okay. If I was…one of those guys, if one of those executives was sitting here and I was to start pissing and moaning about it, they’d say, you know, there’s 17 other movies that have the same problem. What could we do? Covid! Well, I know, but those 16 other movies didn’t start out as a television show. They don’t have to shed that television image before you get people to the theater. But we do. And that’s where we’re at. People should go see it in a theater. It was designed to be a movie. It was…it’s beautiful as a movie. I never thought that it would be back on HBO. Never.

The sopranos draws much more on goodfellas than The Godfather. Also shares more cast members.

Yeah, we're going to see it tomorrow. I am excited to see the sopranos story in a big theater.

Just finished watching. Meh. It was okay. Series was far superior. Actors did a good job of portraying the the original characters. They looked, acted and sounded great. Story wise, it was lacking. All in all, nothing to live up to the hype.
