My ValveKing 100 head has a knob on the back that is supposed to be a "Texture Knob."

Per the Peavey peeps: In their natural state, the ValveKings are true Class A/B amps. As you move the Texture knob, half of the power tubes are phased out and the gain of the driver tube (the last preamp tube in the circuit) is increased. This results in killer distortion and breakup without the need for increased volume.

Per me: Running the VK with that knob turned toward the Class A Low Power end of the scale to me makes the amp sound "looser" with more funky **** going on in the low end, kind of lofi and a lot of interesting "texture" in the high end. I dig it.

Anyone well versed in this? Any down side? The amp is loud as balls no matter the setting and is fulfilling my needs pretty well through the C Rex speakie.

It's early here and maybe I am not awake enough yet, but I don't understand what your asking here?

If you want a great explanation of what class A is then go yo the white papers on the Atkin site.

    Thanks for reply.

A few internet denizens seemed to be implying that using the amp on the lower power/class A setting might have some bad consequences. I don't understand the tech well enough to judge.

Can't really answer your question on the tech side Dado. I wouldn't think the texture knob would cause any adverse or damaging consequences. I mean it's there for a reason.

I do know you got a great amp. Perfect workhorse amplifier. I plugged into several and they deliver it all IMO.

I think the whole ValveKing line of amps are criminally under-rated. Sad they discontinued it.

Looking for a good deal on a 1x12 50 watter combo right now for a buddy of mine.

If it "phases out" one side of the push-pull....you basically have a single ended amp.

Ok, the schematics reveal it is just a pot controlling the output level of one side of the PI tube which is driving the powetubes.
    Simple enough.
    All the best,

It'll beat the crap out of the pair still running. One pair will wear quicker.

Ok, yeah that's what I saw mentioned in some forums but I have trouble remembering things I don't totally understand.

JMHO, reading the schematic, it appears to me to be a gain cut control at the phase inverter negative side. It lowers the gain at one side of the push/pull power section which shouldn't effect the tube's life much. If you're worried about it, just rotate the power tubes sided to side periodically.

It's an interesting concept, would appear to soften one side of the push/pull power section, kinda similar to the effect Boogie was after with two different types of power tubes (6L6 & EL34) running at the same time.
