    Um this....

    What the Fu'.....

Why are they going back in time to the late 80s with the name.....

Its just a stunt to get baby boomers who loved their ultras in the 80s and grab on the nastalgia associated with that model.

Also the crazy tint looks bad....

The Elite was better just for the truss rod adjustment.

They could have added to the Elite....not just trash it all together.

What a damn shame on a great line. Also the Pickups were amazing IMO.

    RIP Elite.

Dude fail on the truss rod....fail on the saddles...fail on the new cut away thing in the back....fail on the new pickups...fail on the over tint neck....just fail all over.

Trying to grab the baby boomer market for that 80s nastalgia and the Ultra Nastalgia.....one last horah to milk the pension funders for some dollars.

The ELite was nicer is nicer.

None of the "upgrades" or colors really speak to me.

    Now...

If the Strat came in Olympic White, the Ultra would at least command a tiny bit of my attention.

I didn't take the time to read all of the comments here (there's a ton) but......
They're nice but I really expected more with all of the hype behind them.

What else can guitar manufacturers offer in 2019?
At the end of the day, it's a few pieces of wood with strings on it.

To a certain extent Fender is in a no-win situation. I do recall 4 years ago when the American Elites replaced the American Deluxes the comments from American Deluxe lovers included:

    • There was no need to change, the American Deluxe was perfect
    • The truss rod adjustment wheel at the heel is a joke
    • Hate the new compound neck shape
    • Even a few hate the N4s, preferred the N3s (granted not many of them)
Fender changes some things back and now we get the similar comments from the American Elite lovers.

Am I buying an American Ultra - nope; not unless they drop a Jaguar or Mustang along the way. No more 25 1/2" scale length guitars for me. But I hope that I would try one with an open mind were I in the market for a Strat, Tele or Jazzmaster.

A lot of people are putting them down but I think they are really nice. It's good when customers have a lot of different things to choose from. I would love to play one that's for sure before I really say much about them. Thanks

I dont mind some of the changes. I've had an Elite since the were released. Don't care about the wheel ...its nice while making the adjustments but then its just ugly.

Love the neck....its the number one feature of the Elite for me and the carve in the back. I think would probably like the Ultra carve even more. Im a little skeptical of the neck change since I love the Elite neck...with the shape change. Im curious as to why they would dump that.

Im ok with the N4 pickups but if they made better ones, that's cool.

I don't like the finishes on the Ultras. But if really liked the guitar I could find one I could deal with.

The block saddles look to be the the same as the Elite and I have to have them. the vintage style.....digs into my hand. It always has bothered my about Strats. But I float the bridge and will press down on it at times...block saddles are nice and smooth.

A lot of the disdain for the Elite and now the Ultra is the lack of finish options. You cannot have a white Strat with a white pickguard, you cannot have a black P-Bass with a black pickguard - which in both cases, you could have with the American Deluxe. Fender has chosen to reduce cost by limiting options - and therefore stock. I just did a price check on Ebay on my 2012 American Deluxe P-Bass - they are selling for the same money that I paid for mine back in 2013. Not so for the Elites.

I see your point. You can't please all of the people all of the time.
I do however like advances in design.
The new ultra seems to have left some of those advances behind (the heel carve is new).

Now I get that there are people who want a traditional strat, with no advancements. Fender offers that.

Gibson caught hell for the same thing.
"We want our les Pauls to be like they always were" !!!
But Gibson offered that. And people still complained.
Then they get crushed for not being innovative.

It really depends on what a person considers innovative...

For instance, there are players who complain that the Volume knob is in a bad spot and that they bump it all the time. A real innovation would be some other way to control the volume besides having a big fat knob in the way.

Or perhaps a MIDI controlled graphic equalizer instead of the ancient potentiometer and a capacitor setup.

I'm assuming even the so-called Ultra noiseless pickups are basically still your run of the mill stacked humbuckers.

I sorry, but I just don't see any real mind-blowing advancements at all in the new Ultra lineup.

I think that is the real issue this time - Fender's teaser videos really set up for instruments that were dramatically new and innovative, and we got something that was more-or-less "one step forward, two steps back" from the previous model. If they hadn't set expectations for the new Ultra series so high we would be having a simple discussion about the differences in the two models.

"Play one before you say much about them"? Boy are you in the wrong place. This is the place where a bunch of guys who have authors for wives come and trash their wife's new novel.

(before reading it of course - but maybe, just maaaaybe they'll read it when it's available used on Amazon)
