I agree with @Triple Jim , there’s a very good chance that it needs a new drive. They make them by the boat loads and failures are common. I’ve had to replace several on high end mixers before that saw only use a few times. My advice if you get it, is to open it up, a remove the drive and research the model and part number and see if see any available for sale on FeeBay. A lot of times they’re just common Toshiba drives or something to that end. Roland makes good stuff.
Already poked around, the interwebz suggested drive failure, they are plentiful and cheap.... At the same time, I am not sure I want another project. Ya know?
I used to create on a tascam 4 track mini disc and have to bounce 4 to 1 or 2 and then record 2 more. That would be fun to play with and do quick recordings. While the DAW has much more versatility and features, recording 8 tracks or so and manually tweaking stuff and mixing down can create a decent sounding results and actually be very fulfilling - the DAW allows you to tweak too much sometimes that gets in the way of just playing and recording. I would take that in a heart beat and use it to record rehearsals and jam sessions. If you could dump the individual wavs of each track out to some type of media, it would be much quicker that messing with a DAW for quick multitrack recordings.
This is the "super advanced" model that has a CD burner built in so a lot of stuff would be easy to do. I would much prefer to dump things into DAW but, yeah, to record instant little projects all in one go would be great. My main concern is putting time/money into it and never getting it to work. I am also pretty bogged down on many projects.
Got so excited about this thing that I realized I just don't want to deal with it. Getting this instead: I have been happy with the modest little brother of this unit, but not enough inputs. Boyo has been sneaking around with his buddies Sam and Tanner and as I suspected, they are writing. They wrote well 4 years ago, bet they are better now. This is enough inputs to record them all together as a band and/or get some more flexibility for drum recording. This should be fun.
There is a distinct possibility that your son and his friend scavenged the hard drive in an effort to make a girl. If true, then the panties likely belong to Kelly LeBrock.
