I have no doubt the 58 Les Paul sounds great, but he could play the same just as good if not better with a different guitar, and get the same sound/tone. There are guys online that play mid to low level guitars that sound just like the recordings of high dollar gear.

It's a good point but I wonder how that particular Hello Kitty instrument compares to one setup wise to an average one anyone can buy at Walmart.

That doesnt frikkin help me. I aint John 5.

My Les Paul practically plays itself. I prefer not to fight with my instrument.

Ymmv (especially if youre John 5)

I kinda take pride in being able to make a cheap guitar sound pretty good, there’s a satisfaction factor there, but it still sucks a$$ playing one if you own any nice guitars.:D

Me and @Ebidis thinks that great players can make cheap or low end guitars, sound great.

Furthermore, a guitar that’s already great, people expects it to sound great, so there’s really no big deal about making a great sounding guitar sounding great lol. What surprises people, is when you have a guitar that’s not expected to sound great, but put in the right hands, it does.

Yeah John played it well but it still sounded like what it is, a cheap crappy toy guitar. Buzzy dead sounding notes with crappy sustain and near zero overtones or harmonics.

Um no. I'm listening to it right now with no picture and it sounds like garbage (to me) ... the playing is good but no way would I mistake that sound as emanating from a "good" guitar.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. What sounds bad to you may sound amazing to others.

I don’t think anyone missed the point. What the nay-sayers are pointing out is that there is some combination of skill and gear that makes great sound.

Point of the OP that I took away was that too many of us rely only half of that equation (gear side).

    Both valid points.

A good player can make a bad instrument sound good. A good player still prefers a good instrument over a bad one.
