This proves that it's the player, not the gear.

Yep. The artists style is still there but the tone definitely changes. I would rather listen to John 5 playing any of those guitars bedsides that crappy toy guitar.

Same goes for Jack Pearson. Yah he plays a Squier sometimes but put a 63 Firebird in the mans hand and completely different sound.

Even Jack seems to be impressed with the Firebird in the video.

It is interesting being on an essentially gear discussion forum watching folks saying that gear makes absolutely no difference. Seems a little odd. But then there is a lot of feeling out there that anyone who spent more on gear than “me” is just wasting their money, and needs more practice. LOL

    1) This is a gear discussion forum? i thought that was TGP...
    2) i don't think that we're saying it makes NO difference,
only that it doesn't make as MUCH difference as some people might think it does
(at least that's what i was trying to say, anyhow).
    3) i would never presume to tell anyone else what to do with their discretionary income.
    4) i think a LOT of people could benefit from practicing more... myself included, LOL.

Funny you should mention that. Here is a clip of SRV playing a Squier.

I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but any idea what pickups are in it?

What slays me is when I let someone play my instrument and my amp and the sound is way better than when I play it.

I can almost guarantee it. From what I read, he only played what came in his guitars. Maybe it’s his hat?

Bottom line is...for the general public, not guitar goobers on a guitar goober message board...

A mediocre player on a 59 Burst though a 59 Bassman will sound mediocre.

A great player will sound great on a First Act through a Gorilla practice amp.

Why? Because its about the music...the performance...what they hear. Guitar goobers hear the gear...The general public...the listening audience...hears the music.

Play the gear that helps you make the music you want make. Focus on the music. That's why we play these things. Or at least it should be.

I can't believe this is even controversial. Is anyone here actually going to tell me that if I plugged a stock Affinity Squier into my rig, the tone would be indistinguishable from one of my guitars with good pickups in it, just because it's me playing? Is that what's actually being suggested here?

Same guitar. Same amp. Passed back and forth on the fly. Does the tone change?

Listen to the whole thing. If you don't hear a change...you're deaf. LOL

I don't think anyone watching that video would walk away with thinking anything other than "damn, John 5 is a great player and took that crap guitar to its limit". If you come away thinking anything else (for example, maybe extra ammo for the thinly veiled "why on earth would anyone want to spend $3000 on a CS when you can achieve the same thing on a Squire??" type arguments that crop up every now and the around here) then good for you, whatever helps you sleep at night.
