I think its a ham transmitter. Bigass OT. 2 Raytheon 6L6GC's. Nifty retro box. Weird stuff inside. No PT so diodes rectifying wall voltage.

Looks like the radiator cover from my great grandmother’s apartment in Brooklyn.

Output transformers aren't normally used in radio transmitters, and neither are 6L6s... unless it's for ULF. What output and output connector(s) does it have?

Wait a sec... it looks to me like the incoming line voltage does go to the transformer, and the red wires from the transformer go to the rectifier bridge. The yellow wires from the transformer go to the 6L6 heaters. It's a power transformer. It may be a lab RF oscillator, with the frequency adjusted with the variable capacitor.

I think it's time to draw a schematic.

    Clearly a warp coil.

The wound coil could be part of a tuning circuit.

Something along the lines of this. Is there a crystal somewhere, or a socket to plug one in? The coil inside the coil in your photo is like the air core transformer on the right side of this schematic. Note the high voltage going to the center tap of the coil (output tranformer primary), like in your photo.

If you stand too close to that coil it'll probably make you sterile.

I'm thinking the 6L6s make the power output more than a VFO would have, and the only variable capacitor is in the output tank circuit. It seems like it could be a CW transmitter, but it's hard to be sure until Fezz draws the schematic for us. :)

Without a load such as an antenna or dummy load, it could be like cranking up a tube amp with no speaker connected. At least put a 50 ohm non-inductive (not wirewound) resistor on the output terminals first.

Nice big power transformer and a pair of 6L6s is a start. :) Vibrolux?

    this is a variable cap

I don't see any input or output device jacks.
