Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, the saddest of all keys. I used the beginning section for a fractal retrospective:

Never in the charts, and rock, Starcycle, Jeff Beck.
Edgar Winter's Frankenstein was good and made the charts (well the short version anyway).

The once and future king of instrumentals, IMO.

I guess that part of the OP got thrown out right away. Oh, well. Who reads instructions or directions these days?
Here's an instrumental that charted as high as #3 on Billboard, and was extremely popular worldwide in 1985. Yes, an actual chart-topper:

Why am I the first to include Steve Morse in this grouping ... RESPECT !
Take your pick from this show ...his frankentele was his main axe since his start with the Dixie Dregs until he had to retire it .... gawd I loved the tones he got out of that thing.

Switched On Bach - Wendy Carlos.

This reached #10 on the Billboard 200 but not exactly sure what year. It was released in 1968.

Do you guys know that Fleetwood Mac has Instrumentals? My favorite is "Albatross". Also, those who like "Sleepwalk" should listen to the version of The Shadows. Beautifully played! I myself have composed and recorded a number of guitar instrumentals. One of them, "Lonely Seagull" became the summer hit of 1982 in Europe. You can hear it here:
