    "To pedal, or not to pedal, that is the question:
    Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
    The huge expensive pedalboards of analog-driven guitarists,
    Or to take arms against a sea of them,
    And by opposing them draw their fury? To die, to hear any difference;
    No more; and by a multi-effects modeler to say we end
    The head-ache and the thousand cables and power sources and pedals
    That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
    Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to stomp;
    To stomp: perchance to hear any difference in sound: ay, there's the rub;
    For in that disdain of analog promises what dreams may come..."

    Shakespeare, Hamlet The Guitar Player, Act 1

    Do you, my noble companions, fathom that in this digital age of ours, does it even make sense to spend all our gold in these contraptions of yore that offer little to no additional value to our tone, compared to the stupendous new dream devices of digital prowess that harness the tone of our wildest dreams, for a fraction of that gold?

    Or am I wrong? Or am I right? Oh the gods have abandoned me in this quest... for 'tis Sunday and the grinding week besieges me and so I ponder these questions... in the most foolish and pedanctic ways, nonetheless! For I long nothing more than a little smile in thy faces and perchance a little anger in thy hearts...

    I still like pedals, FWIW.

    So, Hamlet is asking himself, to die or not to die, which you have posed as to pedal or not to pedal. And I ask, are you subconsciously telling us the pedal is the death of your own tone? I, personally, don't think it is a huge expense to have a pedal board, but I have never done covers of someone else, and I am egotistical enough to be (or not to be) content with my own tone. And like Hamlet, only you can answer your question.

    Shall I compare a Klon clone to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.

    If music be the food of love, play on with endless pedals.

    I'll exeunt this thread now.

    My liege, and madam, to expostulate
    What majesty should be, what duty is,
    What day is day, night night, and time is time,
    Were nothing but to waste night, day, and time;
    Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit,
    And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
    I will be brief. The OP is mad …

    Didn't even have to reword it till the end.

    Tremolo, and tremolo, and tremolo,
    Creeps in this pedals pace from day to day,
    To the last vibrato of recorded chime;
    And all our pedals have lighted LEDs
    The way to dusty OD. In, out, brief echo!
    Life's but a walking shadow, a talentless player,
    That struts and frets his pedal board upon the stage,
    And then is heard no more. It is an effect
    Used by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
    Signifying nothing.

    Bravo! Bravo!

    A mad man indeed; he shall not dispute nor deny, but in his madness he has seen shadows of things to come... like this:

    Alas poor Metal Zone I used one, Horatio, a pedal of infinite distortion, of most excellent overdrive. I hath borne it on my pedal board thousand times, and now, how abhorred in to my ear it is!

    The question is rather about the necessity of pedals in the age of digital effects. Pedals are great to my tone, but so is my modeler, and I can keep (most of) my gold to spend on women and wine and gambling... and a new guitar, why not?

    And no death is involved whatsoever... sooth thy heart...

    Two signals diverged in a braided cord,

    And sorry I could not process both

    And be one player, long I thought

    And planned one path across my board

    To how it wouldn’t need much growth;

    Then looked to the multi, as just as fair,

    And having perhaps the better size,

    Because it was an all in one;

    Though as for that the processor there

    Had not the same appeal to my eyes,

    And both that evening equally lay

    On the floor before my Fender Deluxe.

    Oh, I returned the multi that day!

    For the pain that was searching the bays,

    Verily, getting to the settings truly sucks.

    I shall be telling this with a sigh

    Somewhere ages and ages hence:

    Two signals diverged in a cord, and I—

    I chose the one pedals processed by,

    And that has made all the difference.
