If I was to buy a bar magnet for a Humbucker from a guitar supply store, there won’t be any audible difference between that one or a magnet of the same type that came stock with another pickup, right?

I remember an interview to Seymour Duncan who was saying "all the magnets used for all the pickups on the earth comes from the same few factories in China. There is no other AlNiCo pickup magnets factories in the whole world. If someone has some pickup magnets made in the USA please call me. I'll buy them."

My understanding is that two magnets made from the same material, the same size, shape and strength, used in the same pickup, in the same position and height on the same guitar, with the same strings, using the same plectrum,.... should sound the same.

That's a lot of caveats though, and deliberately, because a whole bunch of other factors that are nothing to do with the magnet itself could impact on what you actually hear.

The theory of what you say is sound though, as far as I can tell ;):thumb:

They may not be charged the same, depending on both how they were charged and how they were stored (especially regarding proximity to other magnets). Some may also be partially discharged on purpose. They can always be re-charged with neodymium if so-desired.

Different foundries have slightly different formulations. If you look at their data sheets, one will show slightly different values than another, and they will have proprietary variations of same grade. For example, this one has four different versions of AlNiCo 5 https://www.eclipsemagnetics.com/me..._assemblies/alnico_magnets_datasheet_rev2.pdf In a guitar pickup, they will all work essentially the same, though.

Looks like your memory is flaky, to say the least. It sounds more likely as simply being made up by somebody with no direct knowledge on the matter, if you ask me.

Nobody with a basic knowledge about the magnet-making business would say anything similar, let alone Seymour Duncan.

    Spiacente...

Thomas and Skinner are USA made, and Tom Holmes gets his magnets from there, and I also believe Throbak uses Thomas, and Skinner.

They also made the original magnets for Gibson.

Tom Holmes recommended Gibson use them when he helped design the 57 Classic in the 90s, and they didn't use them because they were considered to expensive.

Wait, now I'm confused, because Seymour Duncan account liked the post. Is this more of that fancy European sarcasm I've been reading about today?

    .

Raise or lower the pickup an eighth inch and you'll wipe out any differences.

Alnico magnets you can charge yourself weaker or stronger.

No sarcasm here. I remember that thing. Maybe I remember wrong as that friend said. But I'm pretty sure that I remember that way.
