Truss Rod Question

I used the correct sized Allen key on my American deluxe Strat but I think the key itself is slightly worn. I struggled to get a hold of the nut to tighten. I have ordered a new fender Allen key and will try again once that gets here. I am confident that I could loosen the nut and hopefully with the new Allen key can still tighten.

If that doesn’t fit correctly, I suspect I might have stripped the nut slightly. If it can be still loosened, is it a big job to replace the truss rod? I know the walnut plug would have to come out? What else is involved ? What would be the ball park price for those involved in guitar tech.

You can get a tapered hex key that you jam into the hole and it gets tight, so no play at all. If you're concerned about the integrity of the nut's hex, it might be worth getting one. StewMac has them. Maybe others have them cheaper and/or closer to you.

You would likely only need to replace the nut. I hope the new wrench does the trick. If it won't turn at all, then back it off with no string tension, then try again. If it won't tighten then, you may need to add a spacer washer and try again (Stewmac). Finally, if none of that works, take it to a respected luthier/tech.

I think this is what I bought. The fender version with a red handle. I am waiting for it to arrive. I also bought a new Allen key

^^^^This is what to get rather than do any fiddling with it^^^^
