Let me start off by stating that the blues in it's various forms is NOT a genre I'm terribly familiar with and one I'm very uncomfortable playing. What blues I've listened to has been incidental and whatever was on the radio by chance, including this song. What I'm playing here doesn't fall naturally under my fingers and I have new respect for Gibbons. Were I jamming to this as a backing track, I'm sure I'd have played my worn out faux-blues licks and mostly in 12th position. I tell you, I learned La Villa Strangiato a few weeks back and this one was harder for me. What I did here is learn Gibbon's licks and played them pretty close to the album for the intro and middle solos. They sound so good and I wanted to try to get a feel for what he's doing by learning them exact. For the outro solos I then took some of the licks I learned and tried to put a bit of my own spin on it. I'm sure I'm playing this stiff as a board and I now see I got a little lazy with some of the fast slides on the G string but it still was a great education on Texas blues in general and Billy Gibbons specifically. Tube Snake Boogie - ZZ Top
Respectable. As a point of constructive feedback, your low E and A strings lack definition in the mix. Those riffs are played well, but hard to hear.
Thanks. If my blues skills are poor then my recording/mixing skills are pathetic. Fair points and I'd love to work on that one day should I have more time. For the time being though I'm generally putting stuff out there that's slightly better than recording with my phone's mic. For that I apologize for the less than stellar quality.
Another nice job Mouse. Your fearlessness is inspiring and your vids are informative... I'd always thought that this was Tube STEAK boogie... Here I was thinking it was about sex....and it was about surfing. I learned something today....
Thanks B! To be honest I've been erroneously calling it Tube "steak" as well. I'm guessing it's probably still about sex.
Thanks Tery. Way too kind. I'm happy to have gotten through it but I'm light years away from really understanding this genre. Right now I'm thinking too much through it all. Too much head, too little swing.
Hey nice work, especially in a genre you're not comfy in. Songs like this just beg to be played loud, which sort of opens both gear and player up a bit. You da man Ralph!
nice Mouse!! Nice to see it worked n the fretboard like that! and yeah the lyrics arent exactly ambiguous. I got a girl she lives cross town She's the one that really gets down when she boogie She do the tube snake boogie Well now, boogie, little baby Boogie-woogie all night long I got a gal, she lives on the block She kinda funky with her pink and black socks, she likes to boogie She do the tube snake boogie Well now, boogie-woogie baby Boogie-woogie all night long I got a girl, she lives on the hill She won't do it but her sister will when she boogie She do the tube snake boogie Well now, boogie, little baby Boogie-woogie all night long Blow your top, blow your top, blow your top!
Totally Awesome Mouse as always your a great Inspiration !! Kudos to you Now About that Cover Suggestion I made
With that impeccable sense of rhythm and a generous boatload of song experience under that belt, you made those blues your own brother. You killed that, this is on the top 10 of everything you've done as far as memory serves me. The solos are sweet and flow great, especially the second one. That was real tight Ralph, sweet cover...
Thanks Ron. I’d love to open up on a proper amp if I could just get everyone to leave the house for an hour or two. Ha! Yeah they laid it out there pretty clearly. Thankks Monte. Thank you my friend. Thanks Buddha. Wow! Thanks Mike. It was definitely harder than I anticipated and I nearly quit it a few times. I’ve seen you play this type of stuff and you seem to have this in your DNA. I spent too many treats chugging metal power chords. Maby thanks Mr. Rose Thanks! I use 9-42 gauge on pretty much everything these days.
That's been my problem in general, ever since the wife has been working from the house, very little Amp time for me... I have a few things I want to record and post, but the last attempt was met with a "You play that song one more time, I'm jumping off the roof!"
Lol...yeah I know that speech well. Virtually everything I’ve played over the past year was either unplugged or with headphones.
