And still...the OP asked about R&B guitarists. Dudek might have played some R&B once or twice. Silk Degrees with Boz Skaggs maybe.

But when you've got Louie Shelton and Fred Tackett there, you're gonna have three guitars grooving in a big way.

Sneaky good reference. I learned a couple years ago that Smith is also responsible for the jazzy Jingle Bell Rock chord progression.

As for general R&B guitarists, it's a tricky subject. Like punk, but for different reasons, the single instrument isn't what it's about. Guitarists and guitar fans for some reason drool over the lead, but here we are looking for underrated individuals within a genre that (1) explicitly emphasizes the rhythm and arguably the vocals over anything else, and (2) is about the totality of what is ostensibly the backing track to the vocals. I'm not a huge R&B fan, so my knowledge base is limited, but I can't think of any such tune where guitar, let alone lead guitar, is fussed about at all.

So, for example, Archie Bell and the Drells. Killer riffs, simple progressions even if the chords themselves are a bit wonky, tight rhythm (tighten up, y'all), and yet it's hard to even find out who's playing guitar for Archie and company.

What about Eddie Hazel? Can we humor the funk-R&B overlap?

    I'm sorry. VH1/MTV "left wing"?

Oh yeah, all those hard-charging commies and anarcho-syndicalists at Viacom, monopolizing the media and producing mind-numbing content for the youth while cashing in on the ad spaces sold to their corporate sponsors.

The world is a business, Mr. Beal. And it has been ever since man crawled out of the slime.

I have nothing to add to the underrated guitar player discussion but the 'Roscoe P. Coltrane' mention made me laugh...

One of my first supervisors back the USAF was Russell P. Stewart...so of course he became Roscoe P. Stewart

He actually friended me on FB a few years ago and "Roscoe!!" was how I greeted him...haha

No "The Houston Press". They admit in their own article, "all politics aside", and just in their tone, you can't figure out that it's just an absolute hit piece? What ever, I don't listen to either side. I hear leftist wacko's in the music industry make total asses out of themselves all the time, going as far back as I can remember listening to them.:D
