Bought a Strat off of Facebook Marketplace today, and can't quite identify what it is. Pre-CBS headstock, US serial number, but it's black with a pearloid pickguard. Plus the tuners look aftermarket. Am I missing something, or is it a partscaster?

Serial number says it's a 2019 Limited Edition American Performer Telecaster with Natural Sandblasted Ash finish, so I'd say it might be a fake.....

I second the fake opinion. Hope it was a good price.

Price was decent ($325) but still stings. May see if I can get my money back or if I can sell it as a partscaster.

US would not have black truss rod inlay. Post a picture oh the whole guitar.

Hopefully you can get your money back.

    Was the sale local?

Did they claim that they did not know anything about the guitar (It was my boyfriends, it was my dad's before he died of Covid)?

Sorry dude, looks fake to me. The string tree locations are wrong.

Images of the the 12th fret dot markers would likely cinch it. Fakes almost never get the closer Fender correct spacing right.

On a lighter note, welcome to S-T! :)

There’s the full guitar. The guy I got it from claimed he got it in exchange for rent from one of his tenants.

Well then, they got the 12th fret marker spacing more or less correct for once.

They got the top of the headstock shape wrong.

Yeah it’s definitely a fake. So much wrong with that to be a US built fender. Give it a good set up and it could play great. Still at $325 not being a expert or even seeing any pics that’s the first major red flag.

Seems to be set up pretty good, but I'm a beginner to guitar so I don't know much. I have a Squier Tele already and bought this one to flip or trade forward. Looks like I get to keep it.

I'm surprised the tuners haven't been mentioned yet.

If Fender has ever used those tuners I haven't seen it before.

I typically see those on the older & lower end Squires.

Fender used these tuners on Squier Series Strats in the 90s, however they had solid black Fender logos. And they were not MIA as far as I know.

There is obviously more wrong with this guitar. The tremolo is not Fender.

12th fret dots seem to be in a right place but I own a later Chinese Squier Affinity with narrow dot spacing. Also seen Squier necks with black inlays.

I hope this guitar plays well. You were probably taken for a ride, I wish you posted pictures here before buying it. But if you really like this guitar there is nothing wrong with keeping it.

The more we post details about what's wrong with the fakes, the better they get. But how do we tell each other how to spot fakes? Monthly in-person meetings?

So fake. $100 Squier bullet rebadged as a Fender. $325 was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much to pay.
