I put some Deluxe Drive pickups in my Tele but I still want them a little brighter than they sound now. Is it the cap? Not sure of the value of this huge thing.

The cap will not make a pickup brighter or darker, it won't alter the sound of the pickup at all except when you roll back on the tone knob.

How did I not know this after 20 years? People
are constantly advising others the check the caps when they’re not happy with a pickup tone. What’s that about? What do I need to do to brighten things up a bit? I know about height adjustment for pickups but that just affects volume for the most part.

When your tone is at ten the cap is barely doing anything, it's when you start rolling it down is it starts working and more high signals are sent through the cap and low signals pass through making the tone darker.

Internet opinions turned into facts and you get an out of control forest fire of stupid stuff.

A side from adjusting the pickups I honestly don't know of a way to brighten them up except increasing the treble on your amp, it's just the characteristic of the pickups.

You can't add treble without an active (powered) tone circuit. All you can do with a tone control is cut treble (or bass).

If your pickup is too dark as a rule, you can install a cap in series with the output and cut bass. That's effectively increasing treble. Seems radical, but it works. A value around .001uf or .0005uf is probably what's needed.

FYI - The 223J is the code (22, three decimal places, J - 5% tolerance in your case).

Use higher value pots. If you have 250k pots try 500k pots.

That actually does make a difference.

Play any guitar through a clean amp with the tone control on 10.

Then play the same guitar through a clean amp with the cap disconnected.

    You will hear no difference.

Just like those who claim different saddles changes tone, instead of swapping pickups why not just change caps? It makes zero sense.

Nada. We just have to disagree. I bought my Robert Cray Strat & the .1 mudd capp had to go. Replaced it with a .05 cap & much better.

500k pots are definitely the easiest way to brighten dull pickups. Also, 600v orange drop capacitors are absurd in a circuit that generates millivolts. Those little polyester ones area step up from ceramic and work just fine.

If you want to try different capacitors, put alligator leads where your capacitor currently is situated in the circuit and clip different value caps in until you find one that you like.

    Capacitors are AC filters.

Inductors pull current. Pickups are inductors.

Humbuckers pull more current than singles, generally.

How much direct current you want is your ears choice.

They are 250 and I've got plenty of 500s laying around so I'll try that, thanks. The thread can end before it goes off the rails.

    Uhm... current from where, exactly?

    Asking for a friend.

Pickups are the only source of current in a passive guitar.
