    Hi, buddies

We have a new little doggie at rescue-That has traumatic past . When out, she cries:(

I am trying to think of additional gentle ways to sooth her heart.

Old fashioned wind up clock that ticks. Wrap in a towel or blanket. Supposed to mimic mother's heartbeat.

Aw, man. I'm sure she'll turn round with your tender loving care. Doggies are almost heartbreakingly forgiving of the injustices of the past.

    @stevierayfan91

I have a friend who is an expert in dog training and dog psychology.
I wiil ask her for suggestions. If she responds, and this may take a few days,
I will pass her suggestions on you via private message.

Send me the answers to these questions via PM please.

It is a female dog, correct?
    How old is the dog?
Can you describe what her background is? e.g. Family - adults / teens / children other pets?
What caused the trauma if you know - or can find out. This is important.

A lot of the rescues I have or had, have taken many months for them to come out of their shells. It is a matter of building trust. Every dog has their own space. I try to intrude on their space as little as possible. They all eventually start poking their heads out. You have to let a dog be a dog. Once they get used to the idea of a human being around that is not going to hurt them you will see them start to change. They also like a stable environment without a lot of excitement (except feeding time). @montemerrick is on the money. Also new dogs in the environment will take clues from other dogs' behavior around me. It takes time for yourself too, to be able to 'sense' a dogs emotional state. You will though, you will.

Is the dog eating and drinking okay?

my wife works for the Sonoma County Humane Society, and she advises you to get advice from the animal experts at your shelter. It takes a loooong time and a lot of loving patience - which I’m sure you have - to draw out a dog that’s really shut down.

Hey Ben, I'm glad you are there to take care of her. I am going to try to take our new dog for a walk tomorrow, if it's not raining. I wouldn't get a lot of work done at the shelter. I would want to spend all my time petting the animals. Just love em until their forever family arrives.

Give it time and work with positive associations to break the barrier so that she forgets about the past and gets involved with the present. Animals are great that way, they can just switch off and be in the present.

Keep up the good work Ben!

There used to be this feral cat around my house in IA. Hated people. Scared.

So everyday I'd go sit in the field where it hung out. Just sit. No talking...no calling. Just sit there.

First week it hung out. Didn't run but kept it's distance. Every week it'd come closer. Took about six weeks before it finally came up to me. Took another few days to pet it. Then it started following me home. Eventually came inside and I had it for the last 6 years of its life.

    Patience. That's the key.
