The first reactions are coming in:

Plugin Alliance sent out emails today with a $20 off 'surprise voucher'.

Softube is offering 'up to 75% off' for purchasing their plugins, with the slogan "invest in professional plug-ins that you'll own forever."

May the odds be ever in your favor.

The market did it to themselves. Software piracy, sharing, and other unauthorized distribution caused it. Subscriptions don't fix that entirely, but they do limit it.

One of the Waves plugins I really liked was their 'Puigchild' clone of a Fairchild compressor.

IK Multimedia's version of a Fairchild compressor plugin is currently free, if you take their survey.

IK Multimedia is now also taking advantage, by offering their 'Total Studio Max' bundle for under €200.

Buy to own.

According to their marketing, the value of their bundle is over €12,000 - I assume that's adding up the prices of the plugins of the bundle if you buy them one at a time.

There's a 'Waves Alternatives' thread on Gearspace, where users have posted a shared Google docs spreadsheet with a list of plugins to replace every single Waves product.

Next one to jump in is PSP Audioware. Do I detect a hint of Schadenfreude? From their email ad:

"Tsunami? Count on the PSP rescue team. Enter the coupon code „StayCalm” at the checkout page at our store to get 40% discount for any purchase."

Just posted in their forums.. We'll see..

“Dear Waves community,
Over the past few days, many of you have expressed concerns about our decision to discontinue perpetual plugin licenses and our move to an exclusive plugin subscription model. I would like to start by apologizing for the frustration we have caused many of you, our loyal customers. We understand that our move was sudden and disruptive, and did not sufficiently take into consideration your needs, wishes, and preferences. We are genuinely sorry for the distress it has caused.
After respectfully listening to your concerns, I want to share with you that we are bringing back the perpetual plugin license model, side-by-side with the new subscriptions. You will again be able to get plugins as perpetual licenses, just as before.
In addition, those of you who already own perpetual licenses will once again be able to update your plugins and receive a second license via the Waves Update Plan—again, just as before. This option, too, will be available alongside and independently of the subscription program.
We are currently putting all our efforts into making perpetual licenses available to you again, as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you can keep-up-date on this webpage, where we will post real-time updates as they are available.
I would like you to know that we are committed to you, our users. We listened to your feedback, and we will continue to listen to you. Waves is a company filled with users and creators, just like you, and we are all as passionate about the products as you are. With this in mind, we will strive to find the way to make things right by you, and hopefully regain your trust.
Thank you for your feedback and continued support—I wish you all the best,
Meir Shashoua
CTO and Co-Founder
Waves Audio”

Does this mean their now-abandoned subscription plan discontinued a second license that license holders had already paid for or had a expectation of accessing based on previous license purchases?

I’m retired and have no plans or need to upgrade any more. I’m just going to continue to use my music computer exactly as it is (the MacOS can’t be updated on this machine), until the day when it has a digital stroke and dies.

We're in the same place on that. My Mac Pro is 13-years-old. While there are an increasing number of web sites that Safari doesn't work correctly with (including FaceBook) I mainly use this machine for video, audio and graphic production. Oddly enough, DaVinci alerted me to yet another upgrade to the Resolve Free video editing system, and it actually installed! Not bad for a machine stuck on Catalina (10.15). There's no chance of upgrading Logic Pro, but who cares? It offers everything I need and more.

Exactly. Although I just found out that DP11 will run on my machine...

I am a sucker for those "today, it's only $19 deals". You'll never pull me in with a cheap subscription deal.
I've been sucked in a few times. Sitll not used any of them but I was told that I got some great deals by men way more knowledgeable than I.

€900 worth of software for €25 etc etc. Probs only sent about €150 in total

You're not missing much. Catalina is probably the last decent OS. Mac os has gone very bloated in the last few releases.

I'm on reaper on a PC.

You mentioned Logic and DP.

Logic Pro X was released in 2013. Meaning, if you bought it back then, you got free upgrades, including major feature updates, for the last 10 years. OS upgrades are also free.
Quite the difference to how Waves handles even minor updates.

DP charges every few years for major feature upgrades, at around 1/3 of the full price.
Perfectly reasonable, IMHO.
And if you skip one or two major releases before upgrading (like I do) the upgrade price remains the same, even as the final upgrade in that case is a major change with lots of new features.
