Well, is it true that most of us have 10 grand or more invested in gear?

I am very happy with the collection I've amassed for the cheap. I've spent around $1200 over the past 12 years, but I haven't spent any new money in about 3 years. I've gotten to the point where my collection is self-supporting. If I sell something, the money goes in my envelope. When I buy, the money comes out of the envelope.

Thinking about this some more and realized I have probably close to $1,000 or more in stuff "loaned" out to friends that I've just forgot about and never asked for back. An amp, guitar, wah pedal and nice multi-effects unit, with the last loaned out about three years ago. On the plus side, I obviously don't need them, helping someone out and I'm short on space at home and the office now anyway.

    NICE! I'm jealous!

I've never owned an American made piece of musical equipment. Never owned a tube amp. my most expensive guitar I bought was a used MIM Strat for $325

I've told myself after 1000's of rehearsals, 100 live shows, and countless hours practicing and writing new music. I owe it to myself to get a dream guitar for my birthday

I did however drop $2500 on a van for the band.

My 5 electric guitars probably cost me $9600.00 over the 40 years it took to buy them.
I'm selling/sold about $5000 worth of amps, pedals and recording stuff right now. The guitars will probably stay.

If you are successfully gigging on inexpensive gear, give yourself a pat on the back.

    That said, happy NG birthday!

I own way more than the value listed in the OP. But I'd be the first to admit that it's pretty much just pure consumer self-indulgence to own what I do.

Far better to be the player that just owns one or two pieces of essential gear and gets the most out of it.

But hey, I could have been addicted to gambling or drugs instead.

my wife encourages me to buy guitars. She feels like I should replace what I had before I sold all my high end stuff a few years ago to pay for surgeries. I will never buy those Suhr’s again, but might get another Collings with P90’s. That is the only one that I miss. I have one high end guitar now, but to spend 4K or more on one guitar doesn’t appeal to me anymore.

Ummm yes.... yup.... a big fat yes.

Both in money spent and value of my "collection", in my defense, some of my equipment I've had for over 30 years, and I very rarely sell my gear.
But in the last year I been on a bit of a, for me, buying spree.
I had a good reason(excuse)….. joined a new band and NeedeD new (used) gear to get the "right" sound.

This also required a new pedal or 2... never really been much of a pedal guy, just an old MXR Distortion +, a Crybaby and a tuner into an old Marshall or 2 for ever... What a wormhole that is turning out to be.

This is the past 12 months
    '07 Gibson Les Paul 425

    '10 MIJ Charvel 330

    89 Greco EGC68 175
    (This was a trade,
I paid 175 for the MIJ Fender Strat I traded)

    74-75 Ibanez 2350 150

    91 Gibson SG Celebrity 700

    '19 Gibson LPJrDC 475

    Mesa/Boogie caliber 22 425

    Mesa/Boogie Stilleto Duece 650

    TC Electronics Chokra 50

    Digitech Hardwire Digital Delay 50

    Peterson StroboStomp tuner 40

    Mesa Flux-Five 150

    CatalinBread Dirty Little Secret 75

    Nu-X Drive Core
    Marshall Jackhammer
    Beringher Vintage Delay
    Beringher Tremelo
    Beringher Compresser/sustainer
    Boss DS-1
Hard/road Case type pedal board 120 for 6 pedals and board.

MXR M238 ISO Block (power supply) 150

    1Spot /daisy chain 20

    Boss ME-80 Multi FX 125

So that's $4110 spent, not counting cables, straps etc.
What's the value? I'd guess more.

And that's the tip of the iceberg.
    So 10,000 would be.... conservative

I’m only over 10K when you add in the piano, keyboard, drums, and ukuleles that I’ve purchased for my kids. My personal collection isn’t quite that much.

After years of gigging, and teaching lessons...I might have broken even.

95% of my gear was preowned, so I got it super cheap. The most expensive guitars I own are my Fender American Std. Strat, which was a gift, and my Taylor 210, which was a bucket list buy at $429, which was a steal. Everything else with six strings is between $20 to $300, averaging at the $150 mark.

I get it! No knocking on my part!

I see alot of Suhr's on Reverb. I thought they were good because of asking price for some of them. Never played one though!

I had five of them. Four were fantastic, but one was a turd. Suhr’s are usually great across the board. Tom Anderson is even better, and a little less expensive. I’ve called and talked to Tom about my guitars they were building for me, and discussed pickups, etc. Fit and finish is better than Suhr. They are a smaller company, and QC is better IMHO.

As far as guitar gear, I have maybe 4 grand. I can't justify spending more, based on my limited talent.

Yep, same here, only if I add the grand piano which as you can imagine brings it well over.

It’s not about talent, if it was I should have one guitar and spend the rest on lessons:D
